There are some interesting parallels between 2003 and 1991. War in Iraq, a popular president named George Bush, and a bad economy, democratic candidates that did not poll very well against Bush.

There are significant differences now, but I see parallels definitely.

1. 1968 would be a closer comparison...
There is (thus far) no Perot.

He won 13 percent of the vote and carried five Southern states.

2. or 1972
not that I believe in that Mcgovern theory crap. It would be a first term president running for relection after the conclusion of a war.

4. In 1972 we were pulling out of Vietnam,
but it was far from concluded.

I think the only election to compare 2004 with is 2000. It will be very close and it reflects a nation that is more polarized than any point in the last 100 years.

5. Regardless 2000 didn't have the 9/11 factor.
That's still an issue along with disenfranchised voters.

6. Yup.
The more polls I see state-by-state, the more I am convinced that the Gore states are falling back into the blue column, and the Bush states are turning from the deep post-9/11 red back to the red-with-a-purple-tinge that they were in 2000. No matter whom we nominate, it'll be close.
