It all makes Talal Mahmoud want to cry. As owner and operator of the Ultimate
Driving School in southwest Baghdad's al-Ma'arifa district, Mahmoud is
doggedly trying his best to turn out orderly drivers. But the mad, mad roads are
taking their toll.
"Before the war, we had 71 driving schools in the city, now I am one of only six
still open," said Mahmoud, 61.
"It costs me more for the (black-market) benzene to fuel the cars than I receive
in tuition. I'm actually losing money staying in business."
