Rejoice DUers! The Myth of the Saddam loyalists is finished!
And now there is nothing to scare the shiites from kicking the ass
of the occupiers out of Iraq!

Bring'em on!

2. This is the elephant in the room that the media is missing
Sooo, true.

All hell is about to break loose, and our troops are in the firing line.

4. Yeah but a certain fraction of Iraq coverage will now always mention this
So if it is 5 minutes on a newscast expect a whole minute to be reiterating the capture, less time to discuss if attacks occur(hope not).

Did that look like you could coordinate the attacks from that hole? Someone apparently asked this at the press conference.

but you see, I'm not american, I have nothing but contempt for
aggressor armies and I cheer on those who fight for self-determination
in any corner of the world.

7. straw dog alert
so are you advancing the argument that any criticism of the war shows disloyalty to our troops? I hope not because it certainly does not.

8. I didnt say that at all,
but Im not happy that now that Saddam is captured attacks will intensify and more of our troops over there will die.

Im not glad this will happen, so I can say, see I told you so.

I just feel very sorry for everyone over there, and I pray for their return very soon. All I want is for this nightmare to be over.

9. Saddam dead or alive or captured makes little difference
soldiers choose their destiny and I have no pity for them..I have pity for the innocents they slaughter. This blind obedience to 'our boys' is dangerous from DUers and anybody else. They are trained to kill and the majority are just ruthless unthinking bastards who allow themselves to fall prey to man's darkest instincts. To continually preach about the plight of US soldiers just perpetuates the myth of US supremacy and is just saying that Iraqis are lesser human beings. Israeli fighter pilots have refused to engage any more in killing innocent Palestinians, Gi's have the same option. They don't have to be there but Iraqis have no choice . Put your sympathy with those that really deserve it. Any soldier has a moral right to lay down his arms and refuse to fight in an illegal war.But those that have willingly gone are just the will hand maidens of evil Bush and Co.

10. Very important point
While I and everyone else on DU hopes for the end of slaughter and maiming on all sides, I think the view of our soldiers as somehow victims of the war is questionable. It infantilizes them and suggests that poor American "kids" are too ignorant and brainwashed to know what they are doing when they join the military.

In fact it may be perfectly true that many of them ARE too ignorant and brainwashed to know what they are getting into, and that very harsh relalities force them into the military for all kinds of reasons. But to exempt them entirely from moral responsibility is to say that they are less than fully functioning human beings.

13. Hmmm, some minor points
Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 11:27 AM by Tinoire
They are trained to kill and the majority are just ruthless unthinking bastards who allow themselves to fall prey to man's darkest instincts.

I'm not so sure I agree 100% with your phrasing... I would say that the majority have temporarily been turned into ruthless unthinking bastards. When they return to normal life, reality will set in and the consciences they turned off over there will really torment them. There really are a lot of basically good, frightened and confused young kids over there- most of them are in support roles where their indoctrination was a little less rigorous. I'd say, off-hand, that the mix is more like 50% unthinking bastards, 35% semi-thinking bastards, 15% thinking bastards, and 10% totally tormented-from-thought bastards.

Israeli fighter pilots have refused to engage any more in killing innocent Palestinians, Gi's have the same option.

It took the Israelis decades to get to that point.
================

I personally know several young kids who were returned from Iraq because they're... not well anymore. One of them was very close to me. He just sits around all day with that thousand-year stare because he was thrice ordered to do something his conscience balked at. He doesn't care about anything anymore, not even his own kids. They didn't succeed into making him a ruthless unthinking bastard.

There are a lot of those ruthless unthinking ones, (too many!) and part of that is because of our entire society that promotes selfishness and ME, ME, ME without a thought for how we affect other people... Just wanted to make that small point for the ones who aren't.

Peace

6. I am pleased that Saddam is history
I am never pleased at the prospect of more violence.

While the capture is good news, I agree that it is unlikely to end the violence.

11. Ithe Ironic point here is that the violence....
Will most likely increase. With saddam officially, gone the average Iraqi will want the US occupiers GONE! The US occupiers have no intention of leaving their new, oil-rich colony. So the violence is sure to escalate......
