Have you seen the photos of the mass graves that have been discovered in Iraq by coalition troops? Have you seen the photos of infants slaughtered in the arms of their mothers in Halabja, where Saddam gassed 5,000 Kurds to death in 1988? Have you seen the videos of soldiers and civilians being
tortured and murdered in various grisly ways? Did you read of the Iraqis coming out of their hiding places inside the walls of buildings, upon the victory of Coalition troops, where they'd spent years of their lives evading the death warrants of Saddam's regime?
You claim to be concerned about the deaths of "thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians," a questionable claim to begin with, but your opposition to the liberation of Iraq means that you are comfortable with tens or hundreds of thousands of dead innocent Iraqi civilians at the hands of Saddam's regime over the next however many years he would have sustained his relentless brutality and oppression.
Do you really care about Iraqi civilians, or are you just pissed because it's a Republican who carried out Martin Sheen's/Democratic President Bartlett's words in episode 3 of the first season of "The West Wing," to wit:
What is the virtue of a proportional response? ... I am suggesting, General, that you, and Admiral Fitzwallace, and Secretary Hutchinson, and the rest of the national security team take the next sixty minutes and put together an American response scenario that doesn't make me think we are just docking somebody's damn allowance!
...Did you know that two thousand years ago a Roman citizen could walk across the face of the known world free of the fear of molestation? He could walk across the earth unharmed, cloaked only in the words "Civis Romanis" I am a Roman citizen. So great was the retribution of Rome, universally understood as certain, should any harm befall even one of its citizens. Where was Morris' protection, or anyone else on that plane? Where is the retribution for the families and where is the warning to the rest of the world that Americans shall walk this earth unharmed, lest the clenched fist of the most mighty military force in the history of mankind comes crashing down on your house!? In otherwords, Leo, what the hell are we doing here?
Leo was wrong in his response to President Bartlett. The clenched fist of the most mighty military force in the history of mankind came crashing down on the house of Saddam Hussein, and has not only deterred, but utterly destroyed his ability to threaten his neighboring nations, the citizens of Iraq, and the people of the United States. Just look at that man who was once a swaggering, sadistic dictator but who is now a broken-down old man stinking from months spent hiding in a hole in the ground, and tell me otherwise.
Count up the number of successful large-scale terrorist attacks on American interests since 9/11 (the ringleader of which apparently trained in Iraq in June of 2001), and tell me that there has been no deterrence.
I don't agree with President Bush on quite a number of things, but the liberation of Iraq is not one of them.
