How do we respond to Saddam's capture...
...Monday morning, when the freepers at the office start gloating?

Here's my suggestion:

"Well sure! With 150,000 soldiers and a $25 million reward, I'm kinda surprised that it took so long. I wonder if Your Boy George will get motivated now to start looking for Osama again.

You know, Osama was behind 9/11 - not Saddam.

I wonder if the fact that George's dad and Osama's dad are in business together has anything to do with the fact that Your Boy George isn't looking for Osama...?"

1. I would just suggest it's great. Try to be non-political about it.
Don't further any liberal misperception of "hating America". it really is good the guy was captured. You and I may not like how it was gone about, but hey he's captured.

2. Not quite so much attitude would be better
...a subtle little quip like "do you know if the plans to bomb the WTC were with him?"

That gives an opening to remind them WHO was responsible for that.

3. Say, yeah Clinton's military did a great job. :)
Say that capturing Saddam is great for everyone but it still doesn't make the war legal in my eyes or in the eyes of the UN and almost every other nation on the planet. We started a pre-emptive war to find WMD's. We did not find them. We captured Saddam and that is good because maybe it will take some time off the length of the war, but it doesn't make a pre-emptive war all right.

4. how to handle - This is GREAT NEWS
Still doesn't make the war legal, successful, moral or smart. The problems still remain, but one less monster walks this earth. Where is Osama who actually captured us? This doesn't change anything.

5. I'm not sure a round of "yeah, but" is going to be of much use to us
Let the heartfelt celebrations happen and be over with. We could even join in them. In a couple of weeks it will be all but forgotten, and the reality of the situation will return.

6. I hear there's documents suggesting that Mohammad Atta trained in Iraq
... in June 2001. Haven't heard whether they've been authenticated or not, though.

14. Not sure if you're serious or not..
but if so, a reference or source would be in order.

11. I'd like to see a fair and open trial, but could the U.S. be connected,
with Saddam Hussein as accessory to the fact. So here is a good chance for junior to show the Iraqis how democracy indeed works. It could probably be proved that the U.S. knew that Saddam Hussein was a criminal with a bad record for murder before we installed him in the Iraq government to help fight Iran. It could also be proved that we supplied the chemicals for Saddam Hussein to murder the Kurds and his own folks.
Transparency would be good.

16. I'm happy for it, myself...

But, remember this:

The very same people that said that the Iraqis would welcome us with open arms, that establishing a democracy in Iraq would be a piece of cake, are now saying that the capture of Saddam is a HUGE deal that will make a big difference in post-war Iraq.

I mean, how many times do they have to be wrong before folks catch on?

18. Its good that he is gone
And he should be put on trial in The Hauge. The United States taxpayers should not have to fund this mission alone. We didn't need to invade to stop him from using WMD. What does a Well Maintained Democracy (WMD) look like in Iraq?

20. I have been telling them....
...since the war began, that I'd love to see Saddam off the face of the earth. The simple, clean way would have been to have the CIA put a bullet in his head. They may have gotten the 12 doubles in the process, but that's a lot less than a war takes. It wouldn't be the first time the CIA assinated someone they didn't like...they are quite experienced. Of course this would have to be done secretly so Bush wouldn't be able to parade himself down the street. No...he had to destroy and ruin as many lives as Saddam did in order to deem himself the hero.

Also you can tell them...with a wink...you always celebrate when an evil dictator gets his due.
