Schwarzenegger to change parties?
Ok, I made it all up. Probably not. But ....

Saddam's capture crowded more than just Dean off the headlines. Ah-nold, too. And that just when he had claimed his first major political success -- with the unanimous support of legislative Democrats, and against major Republican opposition.

Well, as he pointed out -- um, not in exactly these words -- he's been sleeping with the enemy for some time. Ah-nold is the world's only Kennedy Republican.

IF he were to see the light, I should think his announcement might run something like this -- "Emotionally, I am tied to the Republican party. It has been my political home for years. But a time comes when reason has to take the place of emotion. The Republican party today is not the party I joined, not in California and not in some other states, such as Texas. To govern effectively, we have to be pragmatic. The Republican Party of California, today, is too dominated by an ideological agenda to be pragmatic. (examples: opposition to Ah-nold initiatives, opposition to recovery of energy scam profits, etc.) Reason and pragmatism lead me to join the Democratic Party, understanding that, in California, this is the only basis for a broad-based government to solve problems and make people better off."

(Permission to use freely granted!)

Of course, since the VEEP is the constitutional successor to the president, there could be no Dean-Schwarzenegger or Clark- or Kerry-Schwarzenegger ticket, but -- Ah-nold for Secretary of Commerce? And he could make an impact campaigning as a redeemed sinner for any Democratic candidate -- much more splash than he is ever going to make in the *Bushpublican Party.

What would DUers think of the guy if he switched? Hypcritical opportunist or thoughtful pragmatist or redeemed sinner?

3. Right now he thinks he can force Neanderthals to be pragmatic!
The Republicans in the California state legislature are as backwards as anywhere else. Their hope is to privatize everything to their highest contributors... But, Arni has the rough job of running a state and not shuting down the schools; even though his budget will go a long way in that direction..Close libraries, lay off police/fireman is not popular even among Republicans-even if the most pragmatic of them don't want to pay for the most needed of services.
But the other point..Anyone think Arni is not a Repub becase he is married to a Kennedy is wrong...Anaylsis of his kitchen cabinet shows the appointment of many advisors who are Grover Norquist clones and out to destroy government and privatize vital services. Hardly, Democratic- with a few exceptions...

4. No! We don't want him!!!
It is good for us for the Schwarz to be in their party. After the Clinton thing, which cost us some Southern voters, and not to mention the Gary Condit thing, we need no more of that. Let them have the Gropenator for a change.

6. Arnold is one-party guy at the end of the day
That's his mentality. That's where he wants to go. I think Arnold would prefer to see one party hashing it all out for the good of the "people".

I think he may be dangerously naive, but then again -- who knows???

7. Kennedy's been trying for years
Senator Kennedy mentioned that they've been trying to get Arnold to switch to Dem for years at family gatherings. Not gonna happen.
