I was wondering why there are as many troops in Iraq as there are. We toppled Afghanistan's government, but we only need 11,000 troops there. Don't we have as much to do there as we do in Iraq? (I.E., rebuilding government, seeking out and destroying remnants of the old government, and looking for someone who doesn't want to be found... though now Hussein is caught, there's one less thing to do in Iraq.) According to the CIA World Fact Book, Afghanistan is 647,500 sq km and has a population of 28,717,213. Iraq is 437,072 sq km and has a population of 24,683,313. Afghanistan has more area and is more heavily populated... I would think that the largest need for troops would be in the larger country. Does the hunt for WMD (that probably aren't there) require 20 times as many troops, or is it securing the oil fields? My guess is there's more money for US corpoartions to make in Iraq, but I was wondering if I'm just being too cynical, and there really is a stragegic reason for it.
