Why does Israel think they will be safer without Saddam?
Is Ariel Sharon nuts? I am well aware that Saddam Hussein used to pay the families of suicide bombers in Israel (which begs the question: wasn't fighting this war more of an Israeli responsibility than a US one?), but do Israelis really think their country will actually be safer under a new Iraqi government? Who is likely to replace Saddam? A pro-Israel Arab democracy? Puleeze. What if the Shiite fundmentalists win the elections? Or Sunni fundamentalists? Does anybodyt think that these governments would be friendlier to Israel than Saddam?

1. Has Sharon or a representative of the Israeli government said this?
I mean, I don't pay much attention to what he says, but I'd be curious if he actually said this. Maybe he hasn't said this. Maybe he is actually quite worried. Do you have a link?

6. Here's something about it....
Sharon said "the whole world is breathing easier since the dictator who destroyed Iraq can no longer interfere in its reconstruction."

3. It's not the absence of Saddam
that makes them feel safer, it's the presence of the Americans. That's why there is no exit strategy in Iraq. There will be an American base there before this is all over with. From there America (or Israel) will be able to invade any other Arab country they choose.

5. If you don't have a link, my guess is
that perhaps it's simply that they are happy the man who lobbed all those missiles into Israel during the Gulf War has been caught. Recall that Israel was prevented from retaliating and were getting bombed by Saddam Hussein throughout George First's little 1993 gulf escapade.

7. Well Saddam is a proven supporter of the suicide bombers.
He paid money to the families of the terrorists. When you have a nieghbor awash with petrodollars willing to that, you would breath a sigh of relief too.

8. It's not so much Saddam they were worried about, in my view.
Saddam had been a big worry to Clinton because Usama Bin Laden had Saddam targeted for assasination/overthrow for about 5 or 6 years now.

That would have given Bin Laden a seat of power in a nation that many believed still had WMDs. They always thought it was a matter of time til the Islamic extremists toppled Saddam. Saddam thought so and was becoming increasingly paranoid over the years.
