In the whopper thread I was quite pleased to get some replies from Julie...the actual person who asked Dean about 9/11...and she and other Dean supporters made some great posts that somewhat defused the article I posted. Also liked the funny post saying it was only a castle burger! It was also amusing that several posters thought I was someone else...see below for more on this.

In the Chimp's Dean Dream thread I posted a cartoon with the "Dean is unelectable meme" The best response was another cartoon that basically nuked the original...thanks whoever that was...made me laugh for 10 minutes!

Anyway my point is, defusing anti Dean memes and posts, or those about any candidate, and not taking them personally, is good practice...for the primary and even more for the general election.

If you've been watching TV in the past week you might have noticed that the gloves are coming off...the candidates are beginning to attack each other and Dean..as front runner...has a bulls eye on his forehead. Politics is not for the meek or overly idealistic. Anyone who thinks the nomination is in the bag at this point hasn't watched many presidential primaries...anyone who we're all going to hold hands during the primary is deluded.

Anyway, Dean supporters are to be complimented on their strength and current position...but need to thicken their skin a bit. The reason you get attacked more is because you are in the lead!

DEFUSING ATTACKS 101:

Try not to get personal...attack the message not the messenger

Telling somebody the attack is Rovian, repugian etc doesn't refute it, during the primary it will be democrats attacking democrats, and Rove & CO will be watching very carefully.

Use humor...the funniest post or retort often wins!

Most of all have fun...this is democracy in action...not always pretty but usually fascinating.

One more thing...this is an internet forum!! Don't worry who is behind that username...after all it's just words on the screen. Debate the message. Defuse the attacks. Be smart not offensive.

As to identities, post counts etc...NOT VERY RELEVANT! I could be Carl Rove, another DUer with 5,000 posts, a journalist, a DK supporter, or even a "mystery shopper" checking out the troops for Dean...heh heh

I know this is exceptionally difficult when arguing about Dean's rhetoric vs. his record and especially his lack of foreign policy experience, but it should be on any list of ways to refute arguments.

I really really really don't like Howard Dean. How many times have I said that? Why in the world would I feel the need to take an alternative name to say it again???

Besides, if you had really been paying attention, you'd remember I don't post threads like this to begin with. In fact, I rarely post IN them. If a post doesn't address an issue or is clearly inflammatory, I don't even click on them most of the time.

Actually, I rarely start threads at all, you might remember.
