BBV: California audit of Diebold released! Woo Hoo!
A month ago, the State of California instructed Diebold to submit to an audit of their installed software, firmware and hardware. The initial results of that audit was released today.

According to the initial audit report (more coming next month), after sampling random machines in 17 counties, NO instances of certified software were discovered.

They found stuff that was certified by the Feds only, but not certified by the state. They also found stuff that was never submitted for certification at all. But none of the machines were running GEMS software that was certified and valid... Zip! Nada! Noneofthem...

Unfortunately, the audit results were not complete, so they decided to take another month and audit ALL VENDORS in ALL COUNTIES. It seems that Diebold is making the whole industry look bad and everyone is going to be given a closer look...

Bob Urosevich himself arrived for the festivities and was grilled.

At the end, a member of the Voting Systems Panel spoke quite clearly and informed the gathering that he was "disgusted" that stronger action was not being taken "right now". It was sweet - I so wanted to hear those words "strike 3 Diebold, you're outta here!"

Here is a detailed report:
http://www.blackboxvoting.org/blackboxvotingcgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=28&forum=DCForumID52

Kim Zetter was there, and she should have a Wired News article up soon.

Californian's, and anyone else interested - we all owe Kevin Shelley a big thanks. If you can take the time and send him a letter or a card (nicer than an email - give him a big stack of Christmas cards) he really deserves it. He is setting a standard for all states to meet, and it is having nationwide ramifications. We heard today that WA state is also submitting legislation for a paper trail.

Peace,
GregD

1. YAY! Chimpy can't win without cheating
We have to keep this in the news, I always write "thank you" letters whenever a news agency covers something about Diebold or voting fraud, they have to know that people are listening.

BTW is anyone surprised by this?

The HOTLINE says that one of the networks is preparing a "blockbuster" report on all of this. Maybe CBS, then?

34. Use the Phone, ask for the reporter that covers the capitol.
I did, and i got some good responses. I am now in e-mail contact with two reporters, and just found that the Sec of State does not list all the machines used in the state. I will have to press them on this issue.

31. If they get decertified,
which I bet they will, then you'll see it spreading... Why ? partly because States may realize that Diebold & C essentially breached the contract. So, they may be able to get money back, to leverage heavily on the cost of replacements... Something of that sort... Especially if Congress acts as well...

15. This IS cool.
It also doesn't appear to be heavily censored like the Maryland "audit". I still want to know how they've gotten away with so much and seem to have a great deal of election officials under their thumb?

16. Scares me !!!!!
All this "good news" from yesterday, Bev's press conference, Washington State going to paper trail (of some sort) and now Calif. socking it to Liebold, has me antsy. The vendors are not going to stand and take this like a man. They will whimp, moan and pass out more money.

The more I learn about these folks the more I am convinced that their main reason for not wanting a paper ballot is that it would prove these machines just don't work. Simple as that!!! Fixing election outcomes is just a possible side line for them. Say it loud and clear........the damned things just don't work. They are junk!!
With the MIC involved in these companies, I can understand the corporate "think". Sell the public junk for 100 times what it is worth and move on.

19. Washington State Bill Weasel Clause

"Finally, the bill will also include language to permit electronic verification if such technology is approved by the Federal Elections Assistance Commission and is practical and acceptable to voters."

Here is the back door for VoteHere, long time associate of Washington State election officials.

Will VoteHere get certified? Jim Adler, head promoter of VoteHere, wrote the certification standards.

26. ...and is practical and acceptable to voters

That's a pretty important sentence in a state like Washington, with it's history of citizen initiatives.

The legislature is basically giving the citizens the ability to block ANY e-voting system with a simple initiative stating that the system is "not acceptable".

24. GregD, A request, please?
Now that the excitement of the moment has worn down a small bit, can you post a recount of yesterday's meeting? I'd really be interested in what, specifically, happened in California and who the parties were who reacted the most.

Were any of our "fighters" there? Kim Alexander? David Dill? Susan Marie Weber?

Have you seen any reaction from the academic crowd (Dan Wallach, Professor Jones) yet?

How is this whole thing playing out there on our side?

E-Voting Undermined by Sloppiness

SACRAMENTO -- An audit of Diebold voting machines in California has revealed that the company installed uncertified software in all 17 counties that use its electronic voting equipment.
While 14 counties used software that had been qualified by federal authorities but not certified by state authorities, three counties, including Los Angeles, used software that had never been certified by the state or qualified by federal authorities for use in any election.
