Erwin Griswold and Ted Olson

Hell has frozen over. Not only does Safire make sense, he blasts the GOP for appealing the decision forcing them to turn over Cheney's papers on the energy task force:

"Are Republicans out of their collective mind? Why the hots to hide? A decade ago, Hillary Clinton tried to pull the same kind of wool over the people's eyes about her health care task force, but the D.C. appeals court ruled that her consultants were "de facto members" of the official group and stripped away the secrecy."

It's a good article. Refreshingly unhypocritical for once.

I'm with him all the way until this quote:

"Ted Olson, the most respected solicitor general since Erwin Griswold"

What does THAT mean. I googled Griswold and all I could find is a great quote about the 5th Amendment AND that he represented Nixon and argued for secrecy in the Pentagon Papers case.

In an otherwise great column is Safire being sarcastic? What kind of reputation did Griswold have? Do people actually respect Olson? (hack that he is!)

I did not read the article. But I think that the remark about Griswold was meant to be ironic.
