Graham: Ashcroft better stop corporate agribusiness from spreading

<<Graham Calls for Investigation into Pork-Processing Industry Consolidation

In letter, senator asks Ashcroft to investigate sale of Farmland Industries pork processing operations to Smithfield Foods

Washington, DC - Senator Bob Graham (D-Fla.) called on the Justice Department today to look into how the pending sale of Farmland Industries Inc.'s pork processing operations to Smithfield Foods will affect farmers and consumers.

"I am angry that much of rural America is left behind in todays economy," Graham said in a statement today. "I believe strongly in opportunity for all Americans. Unfortunately, in George Bush's America many family farmers and rural Americans are struggling to earn a decent wage and pay their bills. This concentration of corporate agribusiness scares me because it will make life harder for family farmers to compete in the marketplace. We need to focus on helping independent producers gain more power, and not allow all the power to go in the hands of a very few large corporate agribusinesses.">>

1. Way to go
...'bout f***ing time.... Consolidation has almost killed Wisconsin's dairy industry but that's nothing compared to what is happening in the pork industry...been going on for about 10 years.

This is serious anti-trust stuff!

2. Well
he comes from an agrarian background and has pledged to make rural and farm voters feel included in his Presidential campaign. I am glad to see him taking on Ashcroft.

7. "Get big or get out."
- Ag Secretary Earl Butz, sometime way back in the paleolithic era when Tricky Dick was prexy.

The Ag dept. tune ain't changed since then.

3. BRAVO!~!
And I am also pleased to announce that President Kucinich will get the invigorated anti-trust department of the JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AFTER AGRI-BUSINESS when he takes office.More monopolies and restraint of trade now than under the robber barons era.

4. Crack down on those corporations!
I knew this thread would attract some Kucinich supporters hehe :)

See, we can all find reasons to support each of the nine candidates, which is why candidate bashing just isn't necessary among fellow Dems.
