32. I'm wondering what this bombshell will actually do.
If it's simply hype to appease the widows, I bet the spin backfires in the Pukes' faces. However, if the 9/11 Commission is truly serious about getting to the bottom of what happened when 3000 world citizens were murdered, well, the outcome would/should be impeachment or imprisonment, IMHO.

13. Kristen Bretiweiser (sp) is on
they just showed her talking about how they HAD to know about planes going into buildings (she says they knew as far back as 91), taking Condi to task for saying that they had NO idea that there was any possibility of it--they showed clip of her saying that they had no warning.

KB then said she's had ZERO questions anwered about what happened in over two years, and she is REALLY mad.

Tom Keane comes on and says commission has had almost no answers themselves, and will be calling new witnesses.

missed first part of story

Yup. I think that might be exactly it. There's a world of difference between your typical low taxes/strong defense/good government Republicans (and we all know and maybe even like some of these people), and the blood-splattered, imperialistic, greedheaded neo-con Repukes we've all seen running this country into the ground lately.
John
I remind people that my father (to cite one example) was a Republican and he was sane and intelligent and funny and an all-around good guy. My liberal, pinko, left-wing Democratic mother (4thGen) even thought he was sexy.
There's lots of folks like my dad who want their country and their party back, too. They may even, many of them, jump to our side next November.
Stranger things have happened.

Project Bojinka. "We had no idea..." Bullshit.

If Condi was unaware of this, she should have submitted her resignation. It was her freaking JOB to know.

The precendent was there, the intel agencies knew about attempts and plans to do this, there were warnings in the spring about an imminent Al Qaeda hijacking project, and Bush had a report on his desk in early August saying Bin Laden was ready and eager to strike within the US. Sandy Berger warned them, gave them a plan. We got warnings from 12 different nations/sources of an imminent attack.

Instead, he went on vacation.

Personally, I believe someone ought to be POUNDING these facts in the media. Iraq or no Iraq, Saddam or no Saddam, Bush and Rice and Rumsfeld were blatantly, patently and probably intentionally derelict in their first order of business - protecting the citizens of the US.

All of us need to make this a campaign issue.

Had this happened on Clinton's watch, the freepers and beady-eyed inbreds would have hung him from the nearest lamp post.

Pound, pound, pound.

The Secrets of September 11
The White House is battling to keep a report on the terror attacks secret. Does the 2004 election have anything to do with it?

April 30 — Even as White House political aides plot a 2004 campaign plan designed to capitalize on the emotions and issues raised by the September 11 terror attacks, administration officials are waging a behind-the-scenes battle to restrict public disclosure of key events relating to the attacks.

<snip>Some sources who have read the still-secret congressional report say some sections would not play quite so neatly into White House plans. One portion deals extensively with the stream of U.S. intelligence-agency reports in the summer of 2001 suggesting that Al Qaeda was planning an upcoming attack against the United States—and implicitly raises questions about how Bush and his top aides responded. One such CIA briefing, in July 2001, was particularly chilling and prophetic. It predicted that Osama bin Laden was about to launch a terrorist strike “in the coming weeks,” the congressional investigators found. The intelligence briefing went on to say: “The attack will be spectacular and designed to inflict mass casualties against U.S. facilities or interests. Attack preparations have been made. Attack will occur with little or no warning.”

The substance of that intelligence report was first disclosed at a public hearing last September by staff director Hill. But at the last minute, Hill was blocked from saying precisely who within the Bush White House got the briefing when CIA director Tenet classified the names of the recipients. (One source says the recipients of the briefing included Bush himself.) As a result, Hill was only able to say the briefing was given to “senior government officials.”

Summer Spinning
To GOP, Vacation Boosted Bush Agenda; To Democrats, Voters See a Shirk Ethic
Aug 29, <2001>

<snip>The White House had announced that Bush would stay at his 1,600-acre ranch in Crawford from Aug. 4 through Labor Day on Sept. 3, a 31-day stretch that would have broken a modern record for a presidential vacation, held by Richard M. Nixon for a 30-day trip to San Clemente, Calif., in 1969. News reports played up the record, and a Gallup Poll found that 55 percent of respondents thought Bush's vacation was too long.

The length of the trip revived old questions about Bush's work ethic, and the poll and the news coverage caused consternation in the White House. Aides said they had planned an ambitious schedule for Bush as long ago as late June, but reporters were not told about it, even after they landed here. The White House, suddenly defensive, took every opportunity to show Bush on the go and even created a "Western White House" logo for the briefing room at Crawford Elementary School. Bush revealed that his ranch had new video conferencing equipment for keeping in touch with his national security team.

A Working Vacation
Vice President Cheney plans to fish, travel during month-long valley sojourn.
By Angus M. Thuermer Jr.

Vice President Dick Cheney took time off from his month-long working vacation Monday to outline his plans for August in Jackson Hole and to reflect on "an amazing year."

Cheney, who will live at his Teton Pines home about six miles west of Jackson until Labor Day, defended his energy policy, supported a local decision to limit drilling around the Gros Ventre Wilderness, recalled a life of service in Washington and said his health problems are not affecting his ability to fish for trout on his favorite Western waters.

Ashcroft Flying High
WASHINGTON, July 26, 2001

(CBS) Fishing rod in hand, Attorney General John Ashcroft left on a weekend trip to Missouri Thursday afternoon aboard a chartered government jet, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart.

In response to inquiries from CBS News over why Ashcroft was traveling exclusively by leased jet aircraft instead of commercial airlines, the Justice Department cited what it called a "threat assessment" by the FBI, and said Ashcroft has been advised to travel only by private jet for the remainder of his term.

"There was a threat assessment and there are guidelines. He is acting under the guidelines," an FBI spokesman said. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department, however, would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it.

24. 9-11 Visibility Project
I posted this in the Activism/Events forum, but thought this would be a good place too:

The National 9-11 Visibility Project formed in the Fall of 2003 by a group of concerned citizens in Seattle and Kansas City working to support the efforts of the 9-11 victims' families to obtain a complete and unobstructed investigation into the 2001 terrorist attacks. After learning about each other's activities, the Seattle and Kansas City groups joined together in organizing simultaneous street visibility actions the weekend after Thanksgiving. These public actions were so mutually inspiring and successful that a small group of us decided to launch a national organization/website to expand our efforts and promote the formation of similar 9-11 action groups in other cities. Click here to read more about the individuals involved.

28. Oh geeze...
"Question is....who will they have replace shrub?"

5 minutes after this story breaks and we are already getting the "Bush is toast" and "who will they have replace Bush" posts.

Some people have just learned nothing.

Bush is not going away. He is not "done", "toast" or "finished". We will have to pry him out of office by defeating him in the general election in November - and it will be incredibly hard to do.

This story will have the lifespan of all the others. Unless you can prove George Bush did something provably criminal, these sorts of stories just won't end his Presidency.

What is good about this is that it may drag on and on as more and more of the investigation is reported on, and every little knock against Bush & Co. gives us a little better shot at beating him come election day.

the Clinton Admin. With Lee Hamilton on the case, I fear that is a highly probable possibility.

And if bush* and Clinton testify, Clinton must INSIST on going second, bush* has to get his ass under oath first, or the committee will bury Clinton and pin him as the scapegoat to bush*s folly.

9/11 Chair: Attack Was Preventable

(CBS) For the first time, the chairman of the independent commission
investigating the Sept. 11 attacks is saying publicly that 9/11 could have
and
should have been prevented, reports CBS News Correspondent Randall
Pinkston.

"This is a very, very important part of history and we've got to tell it
right,"
said Thomas Kean.

"As you read the report, you're going to have a pretty clear idea what
wasn't
done and what should have been done," he said. "This was not something
that had to happen."

Hillary sounded extremely confident responding to a question. She very enthusiastically said that both Bill and Bush should testify before this committee.

On the other hand, look at the stonewalling by Bush.

No, all those books and articles blaming Clinton, they're all just more gargage from the VRWC.

44. Kean: "As you read the report,
you're going to have a pretty clear idea what wasn't done and what should have been done. This was not something that had to happen."

Kristen Breitweiser:
"How is it possible we have a national security advisor coming out and saying we had no idea they could use planes as weapons when we had FBI records from 1991 stating that this is a possibility."

50. I'm worried....read his quote...
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 07:50 PM by economic justice
"There are people that, if I was doing the job, would certainly not be in the position they were in at that time because they failed. They simply failed," Kean said.

The use of the "people" in the past tense is troubling to me. Could he really be getting ready to blame the Clinton administration? He says that Clinton could be called to testify. Am I reading too much into that quote?

51. HOW could he blame the Clinton adm. when bush* adm. was on watch
Clinton warned him about this threat and those pleas to do something about al Qaeda and bin Laden were burried in Cheney's back files.

54. hell, there are probably officials who WERE
in the Clinton Adm.

but, the bushies SHELVED the entire bin laden/terrorist report... cheney was 'going to get to it' but...

9/11 this lands in the bushies laps no matter how hard they try to spin it.

65. perhaps badly worded
i read this as:

There are people that (knowing what we do now) if I was doing the job (deciding if they stayed or went), would certainly not be in the position they were in at that time ( in the position they held then in the present=fired) because they failed.

just badly worded due to emotional content/frame of mind?

66. Either the Clinton administration or the CIA will be blamed
But I would be absolutely shocked if Smirk was even remotely blamed.

And you know, why would anyone blame him. All he did was not stop the attacks, use them to ride a wave of popularity, threaten the population with lies of "terror alerts" to boost his approval ratings, install the beginnings of Martial Law, use the attacks to strip away civil liberties, and then use the memory of 9/11 to lie our way into a unilateral war.

55. In light of this, how should we understand Cleland's removing himself
from the commission?

His action makes less sense to me now, if the commission is truly determined to find the truth and lay blame.

If he had wanted to stay on the commission, couldn't he have turned down the nomination for the other post?

It was an obvious payoff to shut him up regarding 9/ll. In other words, I think he was bribed. What are your thoughts?

68. hopefully some truth will come out
I've had so many moments of hope for some sort of accountability from the Bush League that I will now just wait and see what happens.

don't know if this is in any way connected, but Safire's editorial in the NYTimes today was about the secrecy of the Bush administration. He admonished them to open their records (not about 9-11, but of course, the PDB issue would also apply...but the issue was about the Energy Policy Taskforce, and Cheney's little ruse of dumping 30k papers, without one being related to meeting notes.

I can only hope that the Republicans will realize how "unRepublican" the neocons are, and will bring this administration down, in a bipartisan effort which can signal the end of the right extremism rule. Well, I can hope...

My guess is that Condi will be riced, of course, since she's on record. Tenet will also be out, because that would make all the republicans happy. Mueller should be out, but who knows.

Cheney, too, if the reports are true that he refused to pay any heed to the reports the previous administration gave and insisted on his own "intelligence" -- hmmmm-- sort of like with Iraq. See what electing an ideologue gets us?

Those are my guesses. I wonder how long such an investigation will take? Hopefully it will take a while...like, say, into November...

72. Condi-Lies video on TV again. I love it!!!
Anyone who is related to or has known military pilots (and maybe had a kegger with them) has heard this "what would you do" argument since way back when. I heard it in 1987: what would you do if you were ordered to fire on a commercial airliner that had been hijacked? What if it were close to NYC or the WTC or Washington DC? Would you hesitate if the airliner were American Airlines or Delta (etc.)? Blah blah blah is that keg floating yet? blah blah blah.

Condi is either stupid or a liar. I know she isn't stupid, so she must be a liar, and she knows most Americans will suck up whatever flotsom emerges from her pie-hole.

9/11 cover up,BBV so Republicans can steal races they couldn't win.

Wow,if both of these stories get legs then I sure as hell would expect OBL to be pulled out of a hidy-hole within two weeks.
