Poll question: Illinois US Senate seat poll
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 04:10 PM by Padraig18
Following ex-governor George Ryan's indictment today, and the previous indictment of 66 other prominent Illinois' Republicans, who do you think would be the likely winner of next November's election for retiring Senator Peter Fitzgerald's seat?

4. I saw that, and I am agonizing...
We have such a wealth of awesome choices this year, I am soooooo deeply torn about who to support. I like them ALL, frankly, for a variety of reasons...

12. I do NOT like them all...
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 05:06 PM by chiburb
Hynes and Pappas supported the Iraq invasion, Hull and Obama did not. I don't know about Chico.
Obama is #1 in my book, but I could live with Hull.
Anyway, the seat is OURS!!!

One edit: Thanks for your Simon recap. It was beautiful...

34. Nancy Skinner was against it
I don't think she has much of a chance, but you just know that she would be a spitfire in the Senate.

13. That's enough for me. I was leaning to Obama anyway,
But if Congresswoman Schakowsky (who is my rep) endorsed him, then that resolved it for me.

31. on local chicago news the other day, various Illinois pols were shown.....
responding to the Saddam capture.

every one SAVE JS was very carefully supportive of the deal.

Schakowsky, however, told it the way it is: that it was nice to catch the bad bad man, but that it certainly remains to be seen what the future holds in Iraq. Also, WTF were we doing there in the FIRST place, and what about the BS reasons given for going?

love that woman

and, poor Nancy Skinner....lost her job, and isn't even getting a mention

7. Did you listen to his voice?
It sounds like he belongs in the choir. Nice Baritone voice.

I also loved the jazz music in the background.

Here, listen:

Jazzy Obama

and another one

What is it about IL, that we seem to produce lots of good orators? Is it something of a political tradition, perhaps? :)

27. Remarkable, isn't it?
In 2002, we went through a virtual political revolution. Dems control all the state wide offices, except Treasurer, Both house of the General Assembly. And one of two U.S. Senate seats.

9. Obama!
True that there are many good candidates. But this is a guy who will be on the Sunday morning talk shows brilliantly outlining the right thing.

He was the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. Former community organizer. Author. Constitutional law lecturer at U of Chicago. Lead sponsor of legislation reforming IL's awful capital punishment system. Lead sponsor of anti racial profiling legislation.

These just off the top of my head.

Even as a first termer, this guy will bring up the level of intelligence and discourse for Dems and the Senate in general.

Hynes would have supported the Iraq invasion. Other than that (though that seems pretty damn important!)Labor gives him high marks.

33. progressive? I beg to differ
NOt that I won't support Dan should he be the nominee. I suspect he has the inside track. But Hynes was on of the first to propose the real estate tax rebate that occurred just in front of the 2000 election. This was a regressive tax cut and helped make the normally secure incumbents even more so in that election. NOT ONE seat changed hands. I think Obama is head and shoulders above the fine crop of Democratic candidates.

19. I don't want to jinx this race. But I was worried that Jim Edgar would run
Apparently, the White House tried to convince Edgar to run for this seat. Edgar turned them down.

Edgar was the only Republican that could have won this. Edgar still has a high popularity rating.

I'm reasonably sure we'll win this one.

28. I am voting for Hull,
he will be a great senator, but really, anyone with a D next to their name is going to clean up house. Especially if the pubs throw out some wacko because they think the entire state is Dupage County.

Most people dont realize that we voted for Gore by a higher margin than California!
