The RW whackos are going off on France again.
Last night it was Ollie “speculating” that the cash Saddam had with him came from France. Tonight Noonan said basically the same thing, “Maybe Saddam will say that he got the WMD from France.”

What’s up? What did the French do now? These nuts raise the question as if there is a reason to ask it, fueling the rumor, but why the French again? Are we going to invade them now, is that part of the PNAC plan?

1. Am I correct to conclude that if it werent for the French,
we would not be the United States of America today?

If it werent for their help in coming to our aid for our independence via the Revolutionary War, we would in fact still be under somebodys control (probably British*) and would NOT be the independent nation that we are today.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I believe this is correct.

If so, maybe they now because of all these self-righteous loud mouths spewing such rude, arrogant comments, the French would like to retract their previous support?

3. while their help late in the war did help, it was not required
this has been talked out many times before on this board. Actual historians see things this way.

I do find it interesting that the French, Germans, Russians and nw the Italians are mysteriously all suddenly now interested in Iraqi debt relief after months of hard line stonewalling.

What on earth could Baker have said to conjure this remarkable turnaround ? Spilling the beans regarding their post UN sanction arms sales is a distinct possibility.

Its not the countries, its always the money. Always...

10. Hmmm, Jimmy Carter said otherwise...
I think it was on PBS recently that Jimmy Carter said it *was* the French intervention that swung the war in favor of the new US.

I think.

could be wrong..

I was once.

5. The right has always hated France
Hell ever since Joan of Arc they can't stand the country. Two of the worst right wing thugs in history Hitler and Mousilini couldn't wait to take that country. I guess it's the cooking or something:shrug:

6. The US would have lost The American Revolution without France -
no doubt about it. True, France helped the US as much to
hurt England as to help the US, but the war would have been lost
without them.

7. It's a good thing France saved our bacon
We would not have been there to save France from Hitler if they didn't save us first. Viva La New Orleans!

8. France...again
Who doesn't hate the French? When my grandfather landed in Morocco in 1942 it wasn't the Germans that killed 600 Americans, it was the French.

And hasn't France's whole foreign ploicy towards Iraq been driven by greed? I thought democrats didn't think that way.

TotalElf was in line for billions in oil contracts, they were selling weapons to Saddam.

And if you want more reasons to hate the French red this:

Despite what you may think, the French are not our "betters".

11. Then hate all European countries with Colonial Pasts
Morocco and Algeria were French colonies, and their populaces were collaborating with the Nazis. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. The Belgians were brutal colonizers, as were the Dutch.

Our German and Russian allies are concerned about furthering their business interests in other parts of the world. Why should the US be the only power that gets to benefit from international contracts?

Also, who orginally sold weapons to Iraq? DING DING DING Ronald Reagan. Remember that 1983 picture of Mr. Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam? Or do you have a selective historical memory?

14. Well...
...after France signed the armistice with Germany, the British attacked the French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir on July 3,1940 sinking numerous French warships and killing 1300 French sailors. War is a tricky enterprise. Sometimes friends kill friends. The United States has been at war against many Western European countries at various times in our history, but never the French. They are a true ally.
