2. questions for DK from revcarol
she's at a wedding and was having email problems, so I said I'd post them on the 'official' thread.

Ask DK my questions:

Congressman Kucinich: During the Bush administration, we have seen massive increases in poverty, hunger, bankruptcy, homelessness, unemployment and deteriorating health throughout the whole nation, while at the same time services to help these people are being cut to the bone.
As President, what would you do to restore a safety net to "these, our brethren" and how would you pay for it?

Congressman Kucinich: Would you PLEASE come to Southern New Mexico before our primary Feb. 3?? We have been travelling over 200 miles one way to see you in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and would rather spend the money contributing to your campaign!!

3. I'm here for the whole thing today.
And I'm really excited about Dennis' appearance on the show. I emailed my question/s for Dennis to Guy a few days ago. I will not call in unless there is great need; I'm recovering from a nasty cold and my voice is almost gone. But I'm here now, listening to the opening song.

Hello to everyone. LW, it's really terrific you can hear the whole show.

7. Kucinich speech referred to:
Edited on Sat Dec-20-03 03:29 PM by LWolf
"Prayer for America"

http://www.kucinich.us/speeches/speech1.htm

I offer these brief remarks today as a prayer for our country, with love of democracy, as a celebration of our country. With love for our country. With hope for our country. With a belief that the light of freedom cannot be extinguished as long as it is inside of us. With a belief that freedom rings resoundingly in a democracy each time we speak freely. With the understanding that freedom stirs the human heart and fear stills it. With the belief that a free people cannot walk in fear and faith at the same time.

With the understanding that there is a deeper truth expressed in the unity of the United States. That implicate in the union of our country is the union of all people. That all people are essentially one. That the world is interconnected not only on the material level of economics, trade, communication, and transportation, but innerconnected through human consciousness, through the human heart, through the heart of the world, through the simply expressed impulse and yearning to be and to breathe free. I offer this prayer for America.

Let us pray that our nation will remember that the unfolding of the promise of democracy in our nation paralleled the striving for civil rights. That is why we must challenge the rationale of the Patriot Act. We must ask why should America put aside guarantees of constitutional justice?

How can we justify in effect canceling the First Amendment and the right of free speech, the right to peaceably assemble?
How can we justify in effect canceling the Fourth Amendment, probable cause, the prohibitions against unreasonable search and seizure?
How can we justify in effect canceling the Fifth Amendment, nullifying due process, and allowing for indefinite incarceration without a trial?
How can we justify in effect canceling the Sixth Amendment, the right to prompt and public trial?
How can we justify in effect canceling the Eighth Amendment which protects against cruel and unusual punishment?

We cannot justify widespread wiretaps and internet surveillance without judicial supervision, let alone with it. We cannot justify secret searches without a warrant. We cannot justify giving the Attorney General the ability to designate domestic terror groups. We cannot justify giving the FBI total access to any type of data which may exist in any system anywhere such as medical records and financial records.

We cannot justify giving the CIA the ability to target people in this country for intelligence surveillance. We cannot justify a government which takes from the people our right to privacy and then assumes for its own operations a right to total secrecy. The Attorney General recently covered up a statue of Lady Justice showing her bosom as if to underscore there is no danger of justice exposing herself at this time, before this administration.

64. Question for Dennis-
I got an action alert from the SEIU today, about the illegal immigrants being deported from a raid at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has shown a total lack of concern for workers rights, but what do you think of this latest act against people seeking a better life in the US?

17. Here's my question
for congressman Kucinich: ask it for me, since I don't have a voice!

"Congressman Kucinich, I am a teacher. We are currently in a state of crisis. We don't have the facilities, the respect, or the support we need to do our jobs. We have been set up to fail by those who want to privatize public education. I have never seen morale this low in the 21 years I have worked in public education. I have never seen more children who don't like school and who view learning as a distasteful chore to be done with as quickly as possible. What is your position on high-stakes testing as a means of accountability, and what will you do to support our efforts to nurture the children entrusted to us?"

39. You're on!
I like the message about getting organized, getting active, getting out the message.

I was working with my own dem club last summer; I haven't done anything since school started. The 12 hour days have me worn down; there's nothing left of me by the time work is done. I keep wondering if it's all part of the plan; keep us all so exhausted doing the work of 2 people for one paycheck that there isn't anything left of us to organize and work for our candidates.

34. Do we need them to join us? Or do we just want to wallow in hate?
Why should we, out of pure self enjoyment, drive off the doubters?

Stating that we hate repugs isn't going to help bring repug doubters on board.

As DK says, we need to bring Americans together (under our tent).

Because it makes us too much like the opposition. I don't want to "hate." On the other hand, I absolutely love that song, which I can't find on Guy's site today, "Welcome to the new american century." My memory, it may not be accurate.

Here it is:

Ask DK my question:

42. About Wal-Mart
Did you see NOW last night?

The Wal-Mart segment was about how Wal-Mart shows its employees how to apply for public assistance, food stamps, etc. They don't pay a living wage and use government programs to pick up the slack. So, our tax money effectively subsidizes Wal-Mart shareholders.

They also talked about the cost to communities in terms of jobs and tax burdens.

And a poor connection with Dennis.

72. From the Truman Library
http://www.trumanlibrary.org/trumanpapers/pppus/1948/223.htm

223 Address in Charleston, West Virginia.
October 1, 1948

Mr. Chairman, Governor of West Virginia, distinguished guests:

For the past 2 weeks I have been visiting the people of this country.

I have met thousands of people and spoken to hundreds of thousands. I think I have been seen by at least 2½ million people in this country.

I have a vital message to bring to the people of the United States, and tonight I want to bring that message to you.

The heart of my message is this: The national election this fall will decide matters of grave importance to every man, woman, and child in the United States. It will affect the security of your jobs, your homes, and your future.

You have a choice between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Within the memory of most of us here, a clear record has been written that shows how much difference that choice can make.

The Republicans wrote part of their record from 1921 to 1933. They led the country to depression, poverty, and despair.

It is easy to forget what the black days of the depression were like. Let us recall a few, just a few of the bitter facts.

In 1932, after 12 years of Republican bungling, more than 12 million men and women were unemployed.

In 1932 the average worker in manufacturing industries was making 45 cents an hour--if he was lucky enough to have a job. In coal mining, the most hazardous of all occupations, miners were making 52 cents an hour--if they were lucky enough to have jobs.

The workingmen and women in this country could not do much to help themselves, because the strength of their unions had been broken by the reactionary labor policies of the Republican administration.

The Republican bubble burst in 1929, and when it burst:

--There was no minimum wage to cushion the blow.

--There was no unemployment compensation to carry the workingman's family along.

--There was no work relief program to help people through the crisis.

--But the party of privilege was ready to carry big business through the crisis. It created the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for that purpose. The banks, the railways, the insurance companies--they got relief, but not the American people.

--For the unemployed, it was Hoovervilles and soup kitchens. Veterans were encouraged to go into business for themselves-selling apples.

65. Madaline Albright reference and Enigma
This past week Albright was in the "green room" of some TV show and asked Mort whats-his-name "Do you think the Bush administration has OBL in a hole somewhere and will bring him out at the proper time". That is
paraphrased but it's close. Mort whats-his-name went back on the air and
repeated Albright's comments as if she were serious. Albright has since claimed that she was joking. And that is what Enigma was talking about and what an earlier caller was saying but Guy was unable to hear him.

I have to say, I was very upset about ABC TV's decision not to cover your campaign as well as Al Sharpton and Carol Mosely Braun. That is just plain wrong and I resent it. People are capable of deciding for ourselves. Best of luck to you, Dennis. You have a great message.
What would you do about the sell out of so much of our media to Ruppert Murdoch? He just bought Direct TV.
The other evening, I was switching through the channels and came upon that Bill O'Reilley guy. He had 2 other people on talking about how they need to have rules to follow on the internet to make sure the content on it is regulated. I thought all 3 of their heads would spin right off their necks!

113. Thanks for the support! Now a couple of comments on the "tech" trouble.
Yes it can be frusterating, I know that. Now let me explain what is occuring.

First off this was our third show at the much bigger, more local market share, station and the fact is that a live call in show requires a certain amount of familiarity between host and producers.

They, the producers, must know which cds to play and when. And even though they're marked, and there's a schedule, confusion is still possible. Especially when the producers are employees of the station, not the show. They had a different guy in answering phones and the other producer/engineer, that had been at the previous two shows, was in a different room playing with the audio. They had never done a conferance call in that studio (split rooms) before, we didn't know that until after the call with Dennis Kucinich. Oh and the sound problem with DK's call was his cell phone and there was little that the staff could do. Send him some money and maybe they'll get him a better mobile phone.

I suppose that I could learn how to run the equipment, as well as co-host, but the fact is that I'm not getting paid anything for the 180 mile RT (It was 240 miles RT prior to the move) there and back. That and I'm not going to be, nor have I ever intended to be, there for every show. The station has to figure that crap out sans me or Guy. So far after three shows it isn't perfect but it's getting better.

The stream loss near the end of the show was just the stream due to a button that wasn't pushed in 100%, neither Guy nor myself did that, it simply happened.

The music? PM Guy with suggestions for free music to play if you don't like what's there now. Too loud? The stream was weak again, that's the work of COMCAST, so until it's fixed the web music might be off from the actual AM radio signal.

So please bear with Guy and understand that he's having to practically force his way onto these stations in a highly Republican area.

Y'all were great today and I hope you enjoyed Congressman Kucinich and the great, and sometimes bizarre, callers!

Thanks,

Michael

Michael, nostamj pretty much nailed it in post #111. Not knocking you or Guy. I was just more than a little disappointed that the DK segment got toasted, and that the lack of preparedness and the many tech issues that aired was very unprofessional. It was almost a caricature of repug accusations of Dems organizational and execution abilities in general.

I'm getting people to listen-in after much cajoling, only to turn them on to a laughable series of screw ups. That, in addition to the speaker blowing extreme levels of your breaks (a long permanent feature of your show) and the constant blaring of "I Hate Republicans" just won't win over anyone but the hard core choir (of which I'm a member). You just have to fix that.

We have to get real here. This is not about you or Guy, its much bigger. Its about one of the few voices Dems have in America. Its about getting out the TRUTH. Please do what you have to do to get it right. If you & Guy need help, just put the call out to DUsers, they will come forward. If you need equipment FOR THIS SHOW, put the call out.

Sorry to be so damn harsh, but, like a friend who tells you "there's a booger in yer nose" right before you go on a date, someone has to come straight out and say it. And I do it out of love for you all.

"It was almost a caricature of repug accusations of Dems organizational and execution abilities in general.

I believe the repugs have proper funding to do their radio endeavors. Our funding, however, is a constant battle and until Democrats step up to the plate and contribute what it takes to have everything first class then we will, probably, not measure up to your expectations. We contribute hundreds and hundreds of hours of our time during the year and also many thousands of dollars of our own funds. We have to buy our air time and its not cheap. We're stuck on weekends because we don't have the money to do a weekday show and on weekends at radio stations you get the part-timers in the studio for board-ops and producers. Rest assured that I'm a whole lot more upset about technical snafu's than you are and I'm doing all I can to correct them but until we are able to secure enough money from Democrats who are concerned enough to help we will, most likely, remain deficient in our "execution abilities in general."

119. "listener-supported" radio
what I left out of my posts yesterday was the reminder that, until some $$$ Dems step up to the plate, it's up the listeners to support this show.

no, your $10, your $100 will not guarantee a glitch-free program next week... but it will go a long ways towards making sure there IS a program next week.

(and I apologize for any 'crabby' comments yesterday. I was in a bad mood from being sick for a week.)

120. That's ok. All is well.

Fact is that each of the three shows has been technically better that than the previous one. Something that people seem to have either forgotton or not taken notice of.

Needless to say you're right about the money. New shows (unless one is a celebrity) are getting harder and harder to get on decent stations. It's expensive and Guy isn't a Hilton Family heir.

<note to self; no re-education "school" for jeff after the...er...rEvolution, mika might still go>

122. The last show was a tech disaster

Not so. Despite your best efforts, the online version was not better. Bad phones, cut outs, speaker blowing breaks, cutting off (hanging up on) the main guest mid segment, etc.

I have full faith that you'll get it together though.

123. Mika
why don't you put a lid on your armchair quarterbacking, and start a donation thread if you are that concerned about the technical quality of the show?
