Kerry Calls for Special Council Against Attorney General Ashcroft
Kerry Calls for Special Council
To Investigate Allegations Against Attorney General Ashcroft

Washington, DC – John Kerry today called on President Bush to immediately appoint a Special Counsel to investigate whether John Ashcroft violated federal criminal law during his 2000 failed bid for re-election to the United States Senate.

Last week, a majority of the Federal Elections Committee (FEC) determined that Attorney General Ashcroft violated campaign finance laws, possibly exceeding the federal contribution limit by as much as 200 times, and failed to disclose certain contributions during the 2000 election cycle.

“Because Mr. Ashcroft is the Attorney General and accordingly the supervisor of both the FBI and the United States Attorneys, there is a conflict of interest in the Department of Justice supervising such an investigation. Simply put, it is not in the public interest for Mr. Ashcroft to investigate himself,” wrote John Kerry in a letter to President Bush. “Mr. President, now more than ever, Americans must have total faith in their Nation's chief law enforcement officer. An independent investigation by a Special Counsel is the only way to preserve that faith.”

5. They should talk to Saddam
A few of his torturers are probably still in Iraq. They could use the work. Iraq's unemployment rate makes ours look like prosperity.

6. As a Dean supporter
I have to congratulate John Kerry on this. Is there any way for the democratic minority in the Senate to force this issue?

8. Not really. Only Frist can bring up votes. He won't
The only way is to take back the control of the Senate and the House. Honestly the only power they have is to filibuster something that Repubs brought up. They can should all they want, but until we get off our butts and elect Dems, Ashcroft will get away with it. What is he going to do, call an investigation on himself? No way. Very frustrating.

7. who was that reporter on C-span...
some reporter answered a caller's question about why Bush scandals are ignored, she said they were ignored because the dems didn't say anything.

Anyone remember who that was, I want to send her this story and say, go for it, I'm looking forward to you covering this thoroughly.

16. Great!
Let's go after every politician who sees himself or herself as above the law! There is a long list to start with, and the current resident of the White House can be the first to focus on.

If any Democratic officeholder has broken the law, let them pay the price as well. We absolutely have to have a government that serves the people of the U.S. Nothing else is acceptable.

10. As a member of the Senate, maybe he should do more than just
talk about it. Why not introduce a bill and force a vote?

Or is this just campaign rhetoric to try to out-Dean Dean?

13. Nothing can be introduced without the permission of Frist.
No way to force votes. Tell me if you know one. Shouting on the floor of the Senate does you no good.

I wish this were different, but it just goes to show that we have to get them the Senate and House back.

15. ANY senator can introduce a bill.
Whether it gets to a vote or not is a different matter. That's where leadership and using the public for pressure comes in.

All I'm saying is that talk by itself is cheap. I'd like to see him at least try something, even if it fails. Sometimes such moves can push over a stone and start an avalanche. God knows we need one.

17. Plus, he can make Frist's unwillingness to bring it to a vote
a huge issue in his campaign. That WOULD be leadership.
