The fall of a moralist is always a great American spectacle to watch
http://msnbc.msn.com/Default.aspx?id=3158206&p1=0

I Am Addicted to Prescription Pain Medication

True Confessions: Limbaugh built an army of admirers with his hard-right rants. But off-air, he was a lonely man who may have broken the law to feed his addiction. The real Rush

<snip>She gave e-mails and ledgers to the cops showing that Limbaugh had purchased more than 30,000 hydrocodone, Lorcet and OxyContin pills, the Enquirer reported. Law-enforcement sources confirmed the basic facts of the Enquirer story to NEWSWEEK. Limbaugh protested that the stories contained “inaccuracies and distortions,” but last Friday, his vast listening audience heard that resonant, righteous, morally certain voice admit that he had become an addict and was entering rehab.

Limbaugh clung to the ideology of self-reliance to the last. “I’m not going to portray myself as a victim,” he said. Millions of pain sufferers who use powerful medications could sympathize. But the mockery was instantaneous. Liberal mouth Al Franken (author of “Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot”) hit the airwaves to relish Limbaugh’s greatest hits of hypocrisy and his sneers at celebrity dopers like baseball player Darryl Strawberry and rocker Kurt Cobain, and virtually every newspaper dredged up this 1995 quote from Rush: “Too many whites are getting away with drug use. The answer is to ... find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them, and send them up the river.” The penalty for illegally buying large quantities of prescription painkillers in Florida can be five years in jail, and contrary to some published reports, prosecutors do go after users as well as pushers—especially if they want to make an example of a celebrity.

The fall of a moralist is always a great American spectacle. The Elmer Gantry story—the righteous preacher who turns out to be a letch and a boozer—has a special resonance in a nation that postures as morally superior but enjoys sin. Nothing entertains (or instructs in the essentials of human nature) like hypocrisy on a grand scale. When Bill Bennett, best-selling author of “The Book of Virtues,” was outed as a compulsive gambler, and evangelist Jim Bakker was caught embezzling from his Praise the Lord empire, the lamentations of the true believers were drowned out by the snickers of the knowing.

<snip>Granted, Limbaugh’s act has won over, or fooled, a lot of people. With his heartland pieties and scorn for “feminazis” and “commie-symps” like “West Wing” president Martin Sheen (“Martin Sheenski” to Limbaugh), he is the darling of Red State, Fly-Over America. Former president George H.W. Bush, always eager to cover his right flank, personally carried Limbaugh’s bags into the White House when Limbaugh stayed in the Lincoln Bedroom in 1992. After the Republicans won control of the House in 1994 for only the second time in 50 years, lawmakers called to personally thank Limbaugh and made him an honorary member of Congress.

9. the pig is a hypocrite
he spouts faux morality, just like he spouts faux patriiotism.

then he leaves it to others to practice both.

for the hatred and divisiveness he has spewed, he deserves the worst conceivable punishment and deserves none of our pity.

12. The assertion that Limbaugh "aspires to be moral" is laughable
He clearly does not "aspire to be moral" but condemns others who fall below his goals for them.

He is a simple hypocrite and a loudmouthed hypocrite to boot. (not to mention that he's a junkie who has loudly proclaimed over and over that they should be sent to jail.

15. Quite a Skewed Philosophy As A Basis To This Question
All morality is relative. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

Your statement leaves an enormous relative hole. Who decides what "common human right and wrong" is? What's "common"? What you say it is? What i do? Or do we have to derive consensus?

Fear of surgery is somehow equivalent to a physical addiction? Huh? Once again a quite skewed philosophical construct meant to somehow rationalize away a morality preacher having the very failings against which he preached, i would say.

The larger question, which you stealthily avoid, is whether someone can be moral without preaching their version to others. If that's the case, then there is nothing wrong with aspiring to be moral. But, casting aspersions on those with different views would seem to be a "bad thing" that violates one's own sense of morality. Once again, a skewed philosophical construct. "Do as i say, not as i do" as moral philosophy. Interesting.

The largest question, however is my first statement. Morality is not, and never has been, a matter of absolutes. We don't kill people to get what we want as a moral absolute. Right? Well, that didn't stop us from going to Iraq and dropping bombs.

How many innocent civilians were collateral damage? What moral absolute allows that? The fact that you expressed the very idea that there are moral absolutes, becomes the underpinning evidence that your philosophical basis is flawed.

One Final Note: I have had MS for 9 years. The pain in my legs is a constant! Some days it's a 3 on a scale of 10. Some days it's an 8! Believe it or not, i'm not addicted to Oxycontin! So PAIN IS NOT AN EXCUSE. And, if there are Moral Absolutes(!) then there ARE NO EXCUSES! So, rethink this position, most carefully. You're way off the beam.

22. How unkind of you, Professor...

...to attack a dittoheads argument with logic! Have you no shame? Have you no "liberal compassion" for these poor unthinking dupes? That poor soul probably got a migraine just trying to comprehend your post.

24. Sorry. Don't Know What I Was Thinking!
Thanks Johnyawl for letting me know how wrong it was to use logic in a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.

Bad, bad, bad, me.

It'll never happen again.

6. I was joking jeeesh!
Rush is now the victim?!

If you don't see the irony in that (rabidly racist white guy gets rich for doing really nothing of worth and attacking others for claiming they were victims) him now being a "victim" show the depths of hypocrisy they have yet to plumb.

Now, that would be appropriate.

18. Rush always reminds me of Ellsworth Toohey...
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 12:06 PM by CivilRightsNow
from The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.

Ayn on that character- "His chief weapon is mockery. A great, all-embracing nihilistic ridicule. Allow nothing to remain sacred in a man's soul. Earnestness towards any conception, the mere conception of earnestness itself, is the base of reverence. Allow nothing to be important to a man's spirit. Laugh it out of existence. Laughter, not as joy, but as destruction"

23. "Moralist" isn't the word I would have chosen...
... maybe demagogue, or maybe porn king. Certainly nothing is moral about the man. There's nothing manly about him either, come to think of it.
