hi all, merry Christmas from this lonely jew! The other day I got certified by the County BOE to register voters. Would you believe I can deputize other voter registration volunteers! Anyway, I set up a table outside a grocery store in my neighborhood two days ago to register new voters. My neighborhood is middle class, elderly jewish and an emerging African American population. Yes, mostly dem, but most everyone is already registered. Out of the 130 people I talked to at least 70% were already registered which is a great sign. About 5 said they didn't want to register. And about 25 were foreigners. I was also wearing my Dean t-shirt and most gave me a thumbs up or said they already support him. One guy asked me why I support him besides the fact that he was against the war (I guess they were trying to see if I was another idealist, college kid..which I am...but that's besides the point). I told them about my support for his health care plan, his pragmatic views, his success with balancing the budget (mind you, this was all out of the sphere of registering voters...I even moved away from the table to keep it kosher). Two people told me that they dislike Dean because of his Israel stance. I told them that I am an Israeli and I know the reality of the situation as my sisters live over there. I told them my opinion that an even playing field was needed to get anything accomplished over there. Either way, I registered one repub (who failed to fill out her form correctly when i checked it a few hours later...she said she loved Ehrlich, but forgot to put her DOB, ID number, and signature...I'll turn it in all the same). I also registered 16 new democrats (two of which were returned to me later that day by a friend).
So although it was in MD, we have 16 new Democrats registered to vote. And I'll be back out there tommorow hopefully.
I'm applying with several groups to go out to AZ, OH, or another battleground state and register voters. I'm even going to take off my senior year fall semester to do it. Ideally, I want to go to OH or AZ because I think that's where our success is going to rest...
So get out there and register some new voters!!! Yaron
on edit: I won't be working for Dean with these groups. I'll be helping whoever the nominee is. I want to do something more fundamental that will help us win the presidency, house, senate, state house, school board, etc....So go register voters (especially those of you in the swing states!)
