Deficit: Annual amount that government spends more than it receives.

National Debt: Cumulative amount of the deficits, along with other obligations of the government. Maybe six trillion....depending on what you count as an obligation.

I stand to be corrected by google.

The deficit so far this year was 201 billion, for the national debt see the debt clock.

5. Deficit = about $400 B for current year (ends Oct 1)
The debt is a running total of all prior years' deficits (or surpluses, as the case was in each year) since 1776.
