how to save the US beef industry?
buying naturally raised, organically fed, family farmed beef, locally if possible.

it may not 'save' the industry, but it would do family farmers a world of good.

1. Good point!
Where I live in WA, there is a family owned grocery store that started out as a roadside stand. They built a small store (or rather enclosed the stand) where they specialized in healthier foods and personal care products. And it has been growing ever since.

In addition to produce from the usual suppliers, they also carry organic and produce from their own fields - most of it organic. They have a butcher shop that also sells beef grown from their own farm - without hormones and additives. Family members manage the different aspects of the business.I am hoping they will be able to pull together a full lines dairy - cheese etc.

These people cannot keep up with the success of this business. We trust them and the quality of the products from their farms. It can be done and we are healthier because of it.

2. I agree.
Wouldn't that be the best solution? Get rid of those horrid stockyards, and money-driven ranchers and slaughter houses.

Wouldn't Bushco just cringe at the thought?

3. I'm doing my part
I will continue to eat beef. There is too much panic in the world. George H.W. Bush got it right on broccoli, and George W. Bush got it right on beef. Hey, nobody can be wrong all the time.

4. Restore the extracted money for the Agriculture Department and raise it.
Then get more meat and health inspector into the farms. And have these inspectors render fines and penalties for health violations and prevent impure meat from being sold to wholesalers and slaughterhouses.

5. I'll be looking for ...
... the price of tenderloin to go down. Supply and demand, you know?

6. Beef will contiue to be consumed in my house.
I love beef and I will continue to eat it. I'm sure the good people at Omaha Steaks take excellent care of their cows.

7. Just my opinion. Don't flame me.
Beef isn't natural to this country. Cattle were introduced by European conquerors. They have really upset a lot of the ecology here. I read somewhere that we should return the prairie in the middle of America to the buffalo, which are good for steaks too.

9. I second the motion!
Deer, bison, elk, proghorn and moose. Better tasting, better for you, easier on the environment! Return the great plains to its native state. Let the surly young uns loose with bow and arrow and BAM! Natural selection at its finest! ("Survivor: Dakota Winter!")

8. They need to name names
Who made the feed

I am not even sure if the ranchers know if they feed their cattle infected feed at this point
