Any unusual trading prior to the mad-cow announcement?
I would be interested to know if there were any unusual trading patterns in beef futures right before the announcement of the infected cow in Washington.

2. USDA refuses to release test data
"The United States Department of Agriculture insisted the U.S. beef supply is safe Tuesday after announcing the first documented case of mad cow disease in the United States, but for six months the agency repeatedly refused to release its tests for mad cow to United Press International."

This does not mean that someone knew ahead of time - and with only 20,000 cows tested the odds are pretty slim. But then again, why withhold the report?

3. Yeah, my tinfoil hat is on.
It sure seems to me that the Sec of Agric had her speech about mad cow prepared in advance of the "discovery" of the disease in the USA.
