Christiane Amanpour on CBS 60 Minutes tonight....anyone see it?
Yes, she was "on loan" from CNN and she did a report on police efforts in Iraq. They showed raids, etc., but much of the report was on the sad state of equipment etc. that the Iraqi police are supposed to be using. They are afraid for their lives and getting very discouraged. They don't have proper weapons and few patrol cars. She described the situation as "very bad."

She ended with the question of how these people could work and really
control things when the US leaves.

The answer she got: "They'll have to...it's their country."

A pretty cynical report, all in all.

Why CBS had her on, I don't know. CNN not willing to show anything like this????

1. Missed the show
But at least 60 minutes doesn't seem to be afraid to show how it really is.

2. Christiane is part of the 60 minutes broadcast team for
special stories like that one. She isn't on every week, but I have seen her sporadically for many years now reporting on the Middle East. I think since she is a member of CNN International that seems to be somewhat independent of our CNN in Atlanta, she is able to appear on both.

3. Christianne Amanpour
I wrote a letter to CNN last year offering praise for her reporting. She is distinctly "international" as opposed to many of the other reporters. I really respect her work.

I would love to see her interview George Bush or Tony Blair.

11. Rove would never allow that...
only Paula Zahn, Wolf 'Twinkle in your eye' Blitzer, or Larry King would be softball enough to meet their liking.

4. I was sort of half-listening to it while doing some writing
It didn't seem to be a very positive report. But wasn't paying enough attention to say for sure.

5. CNN has had a "relationship" with CBS for a long time..
When something local is reported on CNN it is usually a CBS affiliate that reports it..

6. it's bad enuff for the poor iraqi cops having iraqi criminals shoot at
them, but there have been multiple incidences of moronic US troops gunning them down while they're trying to do thier jobs.

iraq for the iraqis, all foriegners out NOW!

7. Yes, I saw it
It was an amazing report. My husband and I sat and watched, surprised that they allowed it to air at all.

Amanpour was simply telling the truth which made the US look very bad.

The soldier who said "They'll have to..." is a 25 yr. veteran of the Miami police force there to train the Iraqi police without weapons, patrol cars or protection of any kind.

One of the police stations didn't even have windows or doors as it was bombed by a car bomb killing 21.

It was an amazingly honest, but horrifying tale of abandonment by the US. The Iraqi people are truly on their own - Bush has what he wanted and he's outta there.

9. "...surprised that they allowed it to air..." Maybe they figured everyone
Would be talking about the Jackson train wreck.

Just speculating.
The Amanpour piece still hasn't aired on the west coast.

8. Who told her "they'll have to, its their country" - Official US position?
Is that *'s official position, or did that come from someone not in authority?

If that came from a high-ranking US source, it might indicate plans for a pullout of troops, or a lot of them, soon. I could see a big pullout before the election - politics, well, bush league politics. In short, "we came, we destroyed, we left - dealwithit."

This war was a sham, and a shame. Does anybody still think attacking Iraq was a good idea?

Are they tellin' ya you're a minority?

10. Well, now that it's aired on the West coast, it was pretty remarkable.
I wonder how much Amanpour had to pressure them to air something
unflattering to the empire.

Thanks for the heads up. I doubt I would have caught it
otherwise, 'cause 60 Minutes is normally so whorish.

13. It's normally about 3/4 whorish.
They occasionally do some real stuff though. A few weeks ago they did back to back anti-repug stories. Unprotected chemical plants and a gay in the military who was outed a week before he was to get his pension.

16. Yeah, I've seen a few decent stories the past few years.
But since they refused to report on the stolen election
I have a hard time taking them seriously.

Same with Nightline.

The 60 Minutes reports you mention do sound good though.

12. I couldn't stand to wait through the Michael Jackson piece
I'm sure I'm not the only one of 60 minutes regular viewers who was turned off my their decision to lead with with MJ.
