British Tory party demonstrates its incompetence... again.
This is from Today's london times; a little note in the right column of page 2 i can't find on the website; probably because the tories look so stupid, the murdoch press is hiding it.

Tories vow to reverse drug law
The Government's decision to downgrade the classification of cannabis would be reversed by the Conservatives as part of their strategy to tackle gun crime.
A softer approach to cannabis means that more youngsters experiment with harder drugs. David Davis, the Shadow Home Secretary said yesterday. David Blunkett, the Home Secretary, downgraded cannabis from a class B to a Class C drug 2 years ago, cutting penalties for users.
"Half of new crime is drug-related," Mr. Davis told the Mail on Sunday. "Speaking as a parent, I fin the Government's mixed messages on the danger of drugs appalling.

On top of that the london times is wrong in this comment, and cannabis will be downgraded this coming january... liars and idiots.

Its good, as it shows how totally incompetent the tories are, and how unelectable they are.

American background. Tony Blair's cowardly government has not ended the drugs war, rather it is reclassifying cannabis similarly to annabolic steroids... illegal, but decriminalized. (class C). Tony Blair is, as usual, screwing over british kids in a new labour sponsored war on drugs to kill a new generation... The tories (read "neocons") are as stupid as the bushaviks, but are not even remotely electable (fortunately)... and to show off that incompetence with a dash, in the light of 50 years of overwhelming evidence to the failure of the criminalization and prohibition of drugs, this dim-witted scumbag has come out with a really stupid one.... cannabis leads to gun proliferation... and more fairytales from the house of parliment.

1. That explains it
Now I understand why there are more guns in the hands of US civilians than the rest of the world's civilians combined, it's because of our lax pot laws.

3. Any thoughts on this sweetheart?
It ties in with the other policy matters in this thread

http://www.guardian.co.uk/crime/article/0,2763,1113881,00.html

The first comprehensive overhaul of the laws on prostitution for 50 years is to be announced shortly by the home secretary, David Blunkett. Home Office ministers promise that the review will "consider all the available options, no matter how radical".

The main focus is expected to concentrate on tackling the involvement of organised crime in prostitution, its links with heroin and crack cocaine abuse, and the public nuisance that it causes. It is expected to lead to a new clampdown on pimps and kerb crawlers as well as overhauling the laws on brothels and soliciting.

There is also expected to be a strong emphasis on finding new ways of helping women who are trapped in the vice trade to escape from the often-violent sex industry.

It will include new strategies to prevent young people being drawn into prostitution, support for those who find themselves involved in it, and measures to deal with its impact on communities.

4. victorian legacy
It seems to me that the "official" culture in britain is white and uptight a hangover from a former time where people were closet hedonists all the while persecuting homosexuals, laudinum takers (name?), and other "vices".... that british culture has this flipflop, all the while people are people and seek pleasure.

The obvious solution is to end the prohibition and embrace the trade of these vices openly. It will end the stupidity and the persecution of the disenfranchised, be it drugs takers or sex professionals.

I embrace every attempt on the officialdom to step past their stupid historical folly of prohibition. Good they're finally thinking of laying off the prostitutes... some day, perhaps they'll tackle their self created drugs nightmare... one would hope the rational and powerful men in charge could make a strong argument for not killing the youth of britain.... but they are too cowardly to make such a play, as is evidenced by dumbo davis's comment of the thread.

Prostitution should be legal... geez, how many 1000's of years does it take to accept reality?

5. Oddly enough, that's not how I read it.

It is expected to lead to a new clampdown on pimps and kerb crawlers as well as overhauling the laws on brothels and soliciting.

I don't think legalization is the priority here. And I would certainly agree about clamping down on pimps & kerb crawlers.

6. oh well
It was a hopeful wish that they'd for once want to take care of the people who are at ground zero in that profession.. being christmas and all.

The massage parlours in edinburgh have become quite the reputation for being brothels in all but name... don't you think the reality is an ending of the foolishness.

Legalization will bankrupt the pimps and kerb crawlers overnight... simple, easy and cost the public less.... but why do that when we can kill some people with tax money, and beef up policing and boost organized crime, and fill some prisons and spread AIDS.

Geez, to be in the british government, you have to be a sick fuck.

7. For another example of incompetance ...

How to contradict yourself in the same story:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3355879.stm

Thousands of motorists could be spared bans under Tory plans to axe penalty points for many speeding offences.
Shadow transport secretary Damian Green said many drivers caught by speed cameras should face only fines, not points on their licences.
...
"Many motorists are very suspicious that too many of the cameras are there to raise money, rather than to make our roads safer", Mr Green told BBC News.

So he's worried that it seems the cameras are there to raise money. His solution? To remove the penalty that means repeat offenders have their driving licence withdrawn, but leave the fine. What kind of signal does he think that will send?
