1. I suggest we name it....
...Isengard.

Sorry -- that was obvious, I know.

2. How about "The Gilded Cage of Freedom's Lost"?
That would be as good a name as any for Imperial Amerika of the Gilded Cage.

Edited on Mon Dec-29-03 03:21 PM by SpiralHawk
to the entire planet -- hey, maybe 'Flipping Off' the whole freakin galaxy at the same time.

Proper name might be: "Arrogance Unbound."

That's what I see, and I'm stickin to it.

You can't fool me.

6. The ungainly, hollow top structure creeps me out.
It's vapid. Vacuous. Empty. And then the whole thing is put badly off balance with that sharp spike jabbing mercilessly into the sky.

Geez, talk about crappy feng shui, or whatever.

Blecchhh !

8. as an architect
i can't believe how bad it sucks. i'm bitterly disappointed. what is the freaking hurry to finalize the design? where is the poetry?

this should be the coolest building ever built. the cage on top looks like a concession by the developers to the memorial proponents. and a minor concession at that.

9. What was the hurry? Easy. The Republican Convention.
The "ground-breaking" for the building can't begin until the plans are finalized. The plans can't be finalized until a design is chosen. In order to have a Ground Breaking ceremony occur close to the 2004 Repuke Convention in NYC next year, They had to have a building design finalized by December 15.

I just can't remember if it's Pataki or Bloomberg behind this tremendous push, no doubt looking to secure a nice, fat job in (what he hopes is) the 2nd Bush MisAdministration.

12. It's Pataki.
Under the delusion that he might land a slot when Cheney croaks. Remember when he went down to FL to chant "the votes have been counted, and counted, and counted again? Whore. He can shove his "Freedom" Tower. 3000 New Yorkers turned to dust for HIS self aggrandizement???

22. They made the concession for economical reasons
They're afraid that many businesses won't rent the upper floors. But at the same time, most of the public wants the skyline restored (including this NYer) so they had to make a compromise. What I don't like about the Freedom Tower, besides it's name, is that the spire doesn't look right aesthetically to the rest of the building.

10. It's hideous. I pray that tasteful people in NYC put a stop to it.
Pataki should stop dictating to NYC about the site. The building is awful, and the name is worse.

17. Everything about it shouts BROKEN!
It's a scar. That's what we're witnessing being stuck into lower Manhattan. A permanent, non-healing scar.

11. Who came up with the name "Freedom Tower"?
The insistence on plastering the word "freedom" on everything from fried potatoes to imperial campaigns of military conquest to what should be a memorial to the dead (who no longer have any ideology, assuming they did while alive) is making me dislike the word.

21. The WTC...
... was disliked by many before they went up. People got used to them and they became a part of the NYC skyline. My guess is the same thing will happen here.
