How does Mad Cow disease affect Milk Products? ~ Anyone know?

Is there any connection? Do you have to consume just the meat or any by-product can do the deed.

1. Brain and spinal tissue
Muscle cuts of meat are perfectly ok, as is milk.

3. Does not effect milk.
Does not effect steak. Only lives in brain and spinal cord. Cannot be gotten from eating steak, but possibly can from ground beef, if it was mechanically separated and a bit of spinal tissue got in. Therefore...eat only ground beef from specific parts of the cow...like ground chuck, ground round, etc. Don't eat "ground beef". You'll be fine.

4. You are 99.9% correct
Do not eat any marrow out of the bone of a T-Bone steak.

5. well there's debate about
whether it can be passed in milk, or if it can be gotten via steak.

Remember, when they 'stun' cows for the slaughter, they put a bolt in their brain. Brain matter goes every where--on the floor, on the workers.

IT's not a far stretch to see how some brain matter, or spinal cord, or aqueus humour from the eyes can contaminate non-ground muscle meat.

Until we have thorough testing (and not AFTER THE ANIMAL IS DEAD, PROCESSED, AND MEAT SHIPPED ACROSS THE WORLD) there is no way to know where BSE lies.

Even the British, with all their knowledge, still are conflicted about BSE in milk, plasma protein, and muscle-cuts of meat.

10. The Problem is
Prions can appear anywhere in the body of an infected animal. Concentrations occur in brain, spinal, optic nerve, ganglia and in the spinal and its fluid. It may only take a few prions to start the infection going.

In deer Chronic Wasting Diseases (CWD a similar, fatal prion related disease) nasal secretions are a minor concern as most transmission is through feces and urine contact.

Now if the feces can be infected with prions (which may stay in the soil for decades and even be absorded by plants which may be a source of infection) what keeps it from occurring ANYWHERE in an infected animal? We are talking about tiny bits of protiens that do not degrade with heat, acid or regular detergents.

There are few things I fear, but the unknowns regarding Mad Cow is among them. England still hasn't got a complete handle on this and will not for well into the future because of the long "latent period" of the disease.

7. well, those are bad for other reasons
toxins build up in glands, and they're in high concentration form. So just make sure that the thymus glands you're eating are from cows that haven't come into contact with any toxins and you'll be fine. Of course, seeing how many antibiotics, growth hormones, steroids, etc, cows are given from the day they're born til death, and knowing the horrendous things cows are fed (chicken manure, dead cats & dogs, etc), a gland would really be the last thing I would eat....

8. the prions
are found in the brain and spinal cord fluid. the contamination of meat come during the butchering of the animal carcass in which the spinal cord could get severed and the fluid lands on the meat which is then consumed by the person. also, the standard practice of shooting a stake through the brain of an animal to render them unconscious is a dangerous practice as the brain fluids are open to get onto anything.

There have been no recorded incidents of milk being contaminated and, in general, I would think that the chances are slim unless, spinal cord or brain fluid gets into the milk. However, spent dairy cows are sent to slaughter and their lower grade meat is often found in frozen foods and/or ground beef. So if a dairy cow or steer has mad cow, it can end up on the market even if the milk is safe.

I'm concerned about my cats. I feed them food that is made from human grade meat but I'm going to have to check from the company where they get their meat.

9. according to the World Health Org, milk is safe
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/releases/2003/pr5/en/

What I find odd is they say muscle tissue is safe. But muscle tissue is served by nerve tissue. ???

I'm eating grass-fed only from now on.
