Calling DUers to help me with a letter!
Help!

I'm writing a letter to my editor in response to a letter I read in today's paper.

snip of letter I'm responding to:

"However, expressing criticism of our president during a time when our military forces are in harm's way may give support to the enemies that our forces face. When this is so, it would seem that the patriotic thing would be to keep the criticism to yourself."

My letter so far...

Dear Editor:

In response to Frank Brown's letter printed on July 8, I say PHOOEY! He believes it is patriotic to keep any criticism of Bush to "yourself" since our military is in harm's way.

I recall our troops being in harm's way under Clinton's presidency and Trent Lott saying (can someone give me a direct quote????)...

Considering the fact that this administration is hell-bent on keeping the USA in a perpetual war (via Iraq and the War on Terrorism), this would mean no American citizen has a right to criticize this government, indefinitely.

That is a very UnAmerican idea and in fact does NOT support our troops. Our military men and women should not die on a daily basis without the Congress and American citizens questioning what our troops are dying for. Sadaam Hussein did not attack our country on 9/11/2001 and he clearly did not have the means to cause a "mushroom cloud over an American city."

Are we now only allowed to criticize Democrats in this country?

Some Free Country.

Sincerely,

Ripley

1. Seems to me that Chimpy's "Bring them on"
was giving encouragement to the very enemy facing our troops. Does that make Chimpy unpatriotic, un-American?

6. Thanks, I left that paragraph out!!!
I forgot to include:

Since Bush said "Mission Accomplished" how many soldiers have died? Since Bush said "Bring it On!" how many soldiers have died?

BTW is it "Bring It on, or Bring Them on?"

Thanks!

2. Lott's quote
"You can support our troops without supporting the President".

As for the rest: "To announce that there can be no criticism of the administration or it's policies is worse than indefensible, it is treasonous to the ideals this country was founded upon" - Teddy Roosevelt, the last Great Republican President.

7. Actually Frank Brown's letter was
critical of the editorial column which used that quote!!!

He seems to think when there's a war somewhere we can't do that.

3. Two bits of help for you
1) Lott said "We can support the troops without supporting the President"

2) "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt

5. It is possible to support the troops
without supporting the President.

That is what he said, the slimey bastard.

Here is another tidbit you may want to use a slice or two of in your letter:

In his statement of September 16, 1998, Wolfowitz ridiculed Clinton’s policies toward Iraq and said, “Administration officials continue to claim, as Assistant Secretary Martin Indyk did in testimony to the Senate last week, that the only alternative to maintaining the unity of the UN Security Council is to send U.S. forces to Baghdad. This is wrong.”

Wolfowitz then articulated how, with patience and diplomacy, a critical mass could be reached by supporting dissidents in their eventual overthrow of the Ba’athist regime. “he key lies not in marching U.S. soldiers to Baghdad, but in helping the Iraqi people to liberate themselves from Saddam,” he said.

He detailed the patient commitment that such a policy would require however, such an action would deliver much stronger international support than American militarism. He said, “Our friends in the Gulf, who fear Saddam but who also fear ineffective American action against him, would see that this is a very different American policy, one that can rid them of the danger that Saddam poses. And Saddam's supporters in the Security Council–in particular France and Russia–would suddenly see a different prospect before them. Instead of lucrative oil production contracts with the Saddam Hussein regime, they would now have to calculate the economic and commercial opportunities that would come from ingratiating themselves with the future government of Iraq.”

Seems ol' Wolfie had a change of views once Team Bush seized the throne. What a shocker eh? Go give 'em hell! :hi:

8. 2nd paragraph
Just politicizing, in my little opinion. But here's a page of Tom Delay quotes, who was just plain outrageous during Kosovo. http://liberaldesert.blogspot.com/2003_03_23_liberaldesert_archive.html

The point to me is that if we don't criticize the way Bush is handling the Iraq catastrophe we will not be able to get policies that might actually work and consequently, protect our troops. Supporting a rational Iraq policy that includes international involvement, local Iraqi control, legal Iraqi retention of oil and mineral rights, increased military supplies and trained policing is the only way to sincerely support our troops.
