What strange-sounding named town do you live in or near?
Edited on Mon Apr-12-04 10:02 PM by nu_duer
I live in Charleston, SC, but some of the towns around sound strange even to me, and I grew up (at least I got some people thinking that, lol) here.

Goose Creek and Moncks Corner are a couple of the more trippy named towns nearby.

I know there are some wild names out there tho. What strange-sounding named town are you in or near?

7. Climax Michigan, Colon Michigan, Hell Michigan
Alas, I don't live in Michigan at the moment, but since I lived there most of my life I think it qualifies me to comment on the above mentioned cities.

Here in WA, were I currently reside - Wenatchee, Cle Elum, Walla Walla, and Puyallup. It took me FOREVER to be able to pronounce a lot of these...*L*

My favorite weird sounding street in my area is Gobbler's Knob. If THAT doesn't conjure up some horrifying visuals, I don't know what does. :)

22. Rascal Town is Great!
In northern Virginia, there once was a place called Pumpkintown. It later became Snickersville. Now it called Blumont, to the everlasting boredom of the state.

And a former coworker of mine, an ex-cheerleader on whom I had a great crush, was once the proprietress of the Snickersville General Store.

Debordieu is just south of Litchfield beach on the coast. It's one of those places where poor black people used to live, that is now full of multi-million dollar homes.

Oh, they changed the pronunciation of the name too - to the French pronunciation ... of course.

are fake Spanish, trying to blend in.

"El Segundo"
The Second. The second what? (Atlantic Richfield Pacific coast refinery #2 is what it's named after. No lie.)

"Miramar"

"Rancho San Panasquitos"
Ranch of Saint Cute Little Rocks. ?

"Las Pulgas"
The Fleas. Great name for a housing development.

"El Camino Real"
The King's Road. Another housing development.

30. Applebachsville
Supposedly the only trilingual place-name in the country.

(Afflerbach is, I think, the German for apple tree. It got halfway Anglicized, and then they stuck -ville at the end for the town name because it sounded classier.)

You live near Bothell. Nothing all-that-weird about it, except for the time my parents called up to ask if there really was a town nearby named "Brothel, Washington?"

On the other hand, just after graduating from college, I spent most of a year in Hoosick Falls, New York...

66. I love Charleston.
The Pagersis lives there.

Strange towns for me--well, there are tons of them in the NYC area: Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ; Piscataway, NJ; Mahopac, NY; Massapequa, NY; the list goes on and on.

Town names I love:
Pinetops, NC
Conetoe, NC (pronounce Kuh-nee-tuh)
Pumpkin Center, NC
Lizard Lick, NC
Fuquay-Varina, NC

...and again, the list goes on and on.

It's about an hour east of Pueblo on US50. It's a small town, and my wife used to say, "If you blink, you'll miss Swink."

86. Chagrin Falls, OH
I live about 10 miles from there...
Place names in Northeast Ohio are pretty normal. I used to live in Western PA, however, which has some doozies:

Beaver
Big Beaver
Beaver Falls
Turkey City
Tidioute (pronounced "titty-oot")
Barkeyville
Leeper
Frogtown
Moon
Mars
Venus

Fellow PA residents: have you noticed most communities in PA with "City" in the name usually have less than 100 people???

Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg.

He once sent me a postcard of the lake stating: "Fished both sides." and nothing else.

(The translation is: "You fish your side, I'll fish my side, nobody fish in the middle.")

101. Orono, pronounced ORE-no
There's also Merlin, which is pronounced to rhyme with "Berlin," and NOT MER-lin like the magician...or St. Joachim (a French enclave, so it's pronounced "San Wa-kim")...or Delhi, which is pronounced "DELL-high!

Northern Ontario has some great placenames, too, like Wawa, Pettawawa, Penetanguishene, Pickle Lake, Jelicoe, and Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced "Soo Saint Marie," in case you were wondering...).

I think the grand prize winners I've *heard of,* although never visited have to be:

Cheesequake, NJ (top prize for clean entry)
Dildo, Newfoundland (and it's possible to go right from there to Come-by-Chance...)

Right down on the Arkansas line. I've always loved that name. I live near Peculiar and my brothers were born in Knob Noster.

Also, Nevada Mo, pronounced with a long A in the second syllable. Iowa also has a Nevada pronounced the same way.
