What does it take for music to appeal to the lowest common denominator and what kind of music fits into that description?

1. Ever see "American Idol"
It's all homogenized crap. Thoughtless. Pre-packaged feeling. Insincere. It's simple. Simple lyrics. Simple Instrumentation. They say they're "looking for a new voice", but all the voices just sound the same to me. Let's just say this-John Lennon would've never made it through the first round.

I agree, though, I never watch it. I try to avoid it.

4. That would be...
lyrical content which purely appeals to emotion, with relatively simplistic language, no complex chord structures, simple rhythm and measure, and use of repetitive heavy major or minor key themes appropriate to the emotional response sought.
