NO DINGBATS ALLOWED ON THIS THREAD!

Anyway, they were married on April 26, 1974.

4/26/1974. 'Peace, love, and music were in the air,' as someone once said. Another great man, Richard Nixon, was President. Gerald R. Ford was VP. I have no idea who topped the charts then.

I'm planning a big surprise that will involve not only their beloved kids, but also their siblings and his parents (my maternal grandparents have passed away :-()

Any ideas?

(The underlined portion is sarcasm.)

1. Send them the NYTimes for a year on Sundays...
If they like wine, send them a wine of the month, my folks loved it. They have cheeses of the month, not as good, coffees, etc. I liked the NYTimes as a gift, it kept on giving and if they really like to read the news, it's usually too expensive for most people to indulge in. If they are conservative, the Wall Street Journal is a nice gift too.

2. Well, we gave my parents a scrapbook
for their 50th that was a big hit. We pulled together family and friend pictures. Each family member put together a page or two with their memories of my parents. Everyone wrote a heartfelt page or two about how much they mean to us. They loved it!

I recently attended a 25th anniversary party. They rented the local community center, invited all their family and friends, their musician friends entertained (he's a musician), and we all had a great time. Some dear friends and family put up pictures and memories of when they were first dating. Pretty funny stuff.

4. From what you describe, maybe something like "This Is Your Life"?
"This Is Your Marriage"? Sit 'em on a living room sofa and bring out siblings, friends, kids one by one? Assumes that some of these people live far away and that their appearance would be a surprise, but that's how I read your original post. Anyway, just a thought.

5. When my parents had their 25th, my brothers and I
decided that their lives had become too routine and that they should get out more, so we got them season tickets to the Tyrone Guthrie Theater. It was something they never would have done for themselves, and they really enjoyed going, once they had a reason to.

If you're parents aren't the live theater type, then you could probably think of something else that they could enjoy going to together: a gift basket of gift certificates for local restaurants, season tickets to a sports team, whatever.
