IT IS the ultimate hiding place for that Christmas jumper you never want to see again: at a starting price of just $US6 million ($7.8 million), a US company is offering to dump it on the moon.
Anyone wishing to see the back of unwanted gifts, embarrassing photographs, unlistenable CDs or other intolerable bits of junk has until 8.08am AEST tomorrow to bid for a berth on a private spacecraft that will crash into the lunar surface.
The winning bidder in the MoonCrash auction, which is running on eBay.com, will secure a special burst-proof cannister to load with whatever cargo he or she chooses for the one-way flight.
The aerospace company behind the project, Orbital Development, of Carson City, Nevada, says the "condition of the cargo cannot be guaranteed" after the crash landing, but expects that to be part of the appeal.
