Judge Asks Robber: "Was The CandyCane Loaded?"
<snip>

CARLISLE - Cumberland County Judge Edward E. Guido had one question yesterday as he accepted a guilty plea from a man who tried to rob a Shippensburg service station while armed with only a candy cane.

"Was the candy cane loaded?" Guido asked, jokingly.

No, it wasn't.

And Michael J. Shoemaker, 30, didn't get away with any money because the clerk at the Sunoco station on West King Street wouldn't open the cash register.

For Shoemaker, the case is no laughing matter. He could face a jail term after pleading before Guido to criminal attempt to commit theft.

Shippensburg police said Shoemaker, with no fixed address, entered the station at 11 p.m on Nov. 29 and put a candy cane on the counter.
