I'm a bonehead, I forgot to sign my tax return forms
and they're already in the mail. I had two sets of printouts, one signed and one not, and sent in the unsigned forms by mistake.

I'm wondering if the IRS will simply send them back to be signed or if they will use it as an excuse to hit me with crippling penalties and an audit?

5. I thought about that
but what about my W2's? Do you think the IRS is effecient enough to match the new, signed forms with the old unsigned forms and the original W2's? I seriously doubt it. It would probably make their cir. 1978 Wang computer system explode.

4. I would send in the signed forms
before the 15th deadline. Attach a cover letter explaining that you mailed in a set and forgot to sign.

this is from the IRS website:

Sign and date your return. Your federal tax return is not considered a valid return unless it is signed. If you are filing a joint return, your spouse must also sign and date the return.

Just make sure you keep a copy of the return and letter for your records.

6. Do you owe money or are you getting a refund?
If you owe, I would probably send in a duplicate with an explanation. Send it certified mail and save the receipt. If you are getting a refund, then I would call and try to figure out what to do. They will be very unhappy if they send you money twice. At any rate, keep copies.

9. That's okay.
Years ago I did the taxes for my ex and me (we were not married at the time). When I mailed them out I had put my W2 in with his form, and his in mine. I don't remember how it got worked out, but it did, after a few calls.

You should be able to call them or maybe even research on line to find out what you need to do.

10. does the irs have a facility anywhere near where you can get to?
if yes, make copies for yourself of the ones you have, bring the signed copies in to them
before midnight tomorrow, and ask for best way to handle matter. if not, send signed
forms in before midnight tomorrow with a simple note stapled to first page of
each form, that requires a signature:
'sorry, inadvertently sent in unsigned returns. attached are signed returns. thank you.'
thousands of taxpayers forget to sign their forms, and you're not a bonehead. :)

13. that is funny since the guy who does our taxes was just
here - we are terrible procrastinators - and he must have said 10 times, don't forget to sign right here... he organizes everything, puts it all together with the envelopes. I love this man. Plus we are getting money back for a change. Can't remember the last time that happened.

The IRS people are very nice in my experience. Maybe they will just send you a letter.
