What do you like to buy at Costco?
Paul Newman grape juice
Jelly Bellies - despite the Reagan link, I'm hooked
those big plastic bottles of cashews
big-ass apple and cherry pies
the meat is all very good
frozen goodies, too numerous to list

I also buy a lot of catering supplies and food there

Costco's great!

31. Trader Joe's has better deals on wine
I used to stock up on wine at Costco, until I discovered Trader Joe's $1.99 wine - it is soooo good. I can't even believe it's only $1.99. If there's one near you, you should give it a try - the J.W. Morris and Charles Shaw brands are unbelievably good for the price.

5. Rosendahl's Raisins
They're dreamy, plump and juicy goodness. I make raisin bread and oatmeal raisin cookies with them.

Nuts of all types. They're about 1/3 the price of the grocery store and last a long time in the freezer.

Fish, frozen and fresh. Cheap and high quality.

Coffee. They have the best and cheapest coffee in America.

Cheese. Cheap and good, with a wide variety.

Chicken tenders. A good quick meal, and it's real chicken, not processed.

And of course, toilet paper and paper towels.

It took me a long time to work up the nerve to buy one of those big buckets, in case it sucked. It didn't. It works better than any other brand and it's cheap as borscht, too. Also, Coke in glass bottles!

17. Costco is great
I like the Paul Newman grape juice, too! I also like the smoked salmon, tillamook cheese, and yes the pies are good. I usually stay away from the sweets though. I buy the hot chocolate packages, and sometimes they have good veggies/salads. I usually get their giant packages of microwave popcorn, though I don't especially like their popcorn because it is too salty. But it certainly is less expensive, and not too bad at that. What I really like to do is go there and get the free samples of stuff. Also they have good pizza and hot dogs at their little cafe- but I've been sorta staying away from hot dogs and beef. This is off the subject, but at Trader Joe's they are carrying buffalo burgers now. Yeah, they are frozen and organic. Pretty good.

also, the frozen wild rice and chicken casserole is awesome (nuke for 10 minutes and dinner's done)

Best prices on books, DVDs and CDs, although the selection is limited.

And it's the best place to graze on Saturdays.

22. Also, I have access to 2 Costco stores. And, one sells gas. What a deal!
Usually, it's 15-20¢ per gallon cheaper than at other service stations in the area.

So, I fill up.

:-)

28. Agreed, right now gasoline is my #1 purchase at Costco
I filled up my little G20 at $2.01 per gallon Wednesday in Henderson, Nevada. The average price around here is $2.15 and nothing else nearby was less than the $2.08 for members at Vons. My required once-a-week trip to that area is perfect timing for a fillup.

Nothing will dampen the rampant Costco enthusiasm on DU, but I have a mathematical background, and job, and completely concur with Consumer Reports and other assessments that many people join warehouse clubs who do not benefit from them. Several big ticket electronics purchases per year is the primary way to justify and overcome that annual $45 nut.

Regarding food purchases, one study concluded that anyone who lived in a populated area with several grocery chains could match or better the warehouse prices simply by taking advantage of isolated weekly specials at the chains. You save $45 plus the need to buy bulk.

32. I'm sort of embarrassed to admit this.....
but I'm obsessed with getting the best deal and a couple of years ago (when I first started shopping at Costco) I created a spreadsheet to compare costs between Costco and the local grocery stores. It helped me figure out what were the really great deals at Costco and stick to those - and avoid the prepared foods and especially those impulse buys. After shopping there for the first few months (before I did the comparison) I found I was spending more on groceries because I was just buying more - buying more than we needed and I wanted to get out of that bulk buying mentality. So now I go to Costco only once every other month or so and I don't buy nearly as much stuff.

Their price on Concha Y Toro wine from Chile is outstanding. $6.49 for a 1.5 liter bottle. And they have a 28 pack of Molson in bottles for $14.99. Also, Guinness Stout in the tall cans=$15 for a 15 pack. Plus a ton of other supplies.

Their heavy duty weedblock that I bought there awhile back is awesome! Much better than the cheap stuff I bought at the hardware store.
