watched American Idol?
Did anyone watch American Idol tonight? I had to work late and forgot to tape it.

I just want to know how my homegirl Fantasia did.

1. She did well ....
I think they all did. I've been watching since the beginning and I still don't know all of their names, but I'm hoping that they vote off one of the guys this time. The country singer type one.

:hi:

4. Fantasia did amazing!
She sang "Summertime". Randy Jackson said it was the best performance he'd seen in 3 seasons...I guess you could say he liked it... :)

6. She was amazing tonight
There were a few other pretty good performances tonight, but Fantasia's was just in another league.

9. She just might be
the next American Idol. Here is my prediction for the final 3.

Fantasia
Jasmine(Hawaiian young girl)
George

Latoya is extremely talented, but I do not think that she has connected with the public as well as the other three.

12. Well tonight
Jasmine wasn't all that. She was OK, but nothing more really, at least in my view. Latoya did a great job also, as did Jennifer Hudson. Those are my picks for the final three. Fantasia, Jennifer and Latoya. I feel bad you missed tonight with the performance Fantasia gave.

15. Me too
there is a radio station here that has been having Fantasia parties with her brothers and they have been playing excepts from her performances on the air. I just have not been able to catch them yet.

24. Fantasia is great
really. she is a great singer. i hope they don't turn her into a pre-packaged buffoon. randy jackson said it was the best performance ever by an idol. he was right. it rivaled som versions of summertime i have by very very good singers.

Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 06:37 AM by ET Awful

8. Hehe..
well, there are some really good singers, but then again, I've heard some pretty scary clips from this year's crop... in abny case, when/if any of them can actually sit down and write somw songs (not just lyrics), then I'll be impressed... but, hey.. it's the top-rated show in America, so they must be doing something right.. just not my thing, ya know?

10. So, if an artist
does not write also, he or she gets no respect from you? So, I guess you do not like Soul music then?

13. I like soul music...
and some country, etc... of course, that's because professional songwriters are very good at writing songs.. that's why they get paid really well for it.. but, at the same time, I would never put a singer like Faith Hill in the same category as artists like The Beatles, or any other group/individual who writes his/her own music.

17. Going by your theory
what songs have Aretha written? If none, does that make her less of an artist?

In case you are wondering who Aretha is, her last name is Franklin.

20. Yes..
indeed it would make her less of an artist. Can you compare somebody who does paint-by-numbers to Picasso? Don't get me wrong.. she is one of the best singers who has ever graced this planet, but, there are also lots of incredible singers who also have the talent to write their own music. In my opinion, those are the true artists. And, your smarmyness is duly noted. I am well aware of who you were speaking of.

21. U have writers who
can't sing and depend on others to bring life to their words.

I have know great singers who has the ability to make bad songs good, but I have never heard a bad singer make a great song,good...other than Dylan maybe.

but, the messenger who can bring his/her own message to life is far more talented than an outside interpreter who has no message of their own.

23. Everything is open to interpretation
and I guess it would depend upon whether you are writing for you own enjoyment or whether you want to touch people with your words.

Which is more powerful the pen or the voice? Things that make you say -----ummmmmmm!

33. or even Yo Yo Ma
He pretty much sticks to other people's work too, doesn't he?

Back in Sinatra's day, singers didn't write their own stuff. Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, Tony Bennett....

I think singing and playing an instrument are definitely talents, and anyone who can master these talents is an artist.

Bob Dylan wrote great songs, but I can't stand to hear him sing.

Let me take this chance to say John Stevens, the red headed guy, SUCKS. Not just tonight, but always. Why is he still on the show?

and that goes for Jon also. It is awful they got rid of the redhaired girl who could really sing and kept the redhaired boy who is just a novelty act!

26. I agree . . .
he has a decent enough voice for a particular kind of singing . . . but not the singing in this kind of competition . . . and, as Simon pointed out tonight, the kid has zero charisma . . . I'm amazed that he's still around . . . must have a hell of a voting bloc back at his high school . . .

Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 12:10 AM by charliebrown
Second best version I have ever heard. Janis Joplins was the best for me. I think she has serious challenges from jennifer and latoya for tonight. And George in the long run.

28. I hadn't really taken notice of Fantasia until tonight . . .
her rendition of "Summertime" was absolutely stunning . . . I've always thought LaToya was the only one in this competition who could really sing, but I changed my mind tonight . . . Fantasia could very well win it . . .

Doesn't matter if she wins, she'll have her own recording contract anyway and she'll be a huge star. She's amazing.

I've seen some great performances on American Idol. "House is not a Home" and "Touch me in the Morning" by Tamyra Gray come to mind. However, Fantasia blew her away tonight. Sure, she could have sang it at her regular voice and it still would have been great. Yet she made it special tonight. It is as if she really brought out the meaning and emotions in the song.

Her interpretation is what made it a "hook, line, and sinker".

LaToya London was the second best tonight. In terms of interpretation, Fantasia had the uppper hand. However, LaToya had some bright spots too.

Her final note was sublime. If you were in the audience that night, you could probably hear a ringing in your ears. That means she was super in tune.
