Help! Need driving directions to Juneau Alaska
Ha! Fooled ya

THERE ARE NO DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO JUNEAU ALASKA

Alaska's state capital is landlocked.

Juneau City and Borough is a borough located in the U.S. State of Alaska. As of 2000 the population is 30,711. The borough seat is the city of Juneau. Juneau is the only incorporated place, because the city and borough boundaries coincide. Juneau is the only state capital in the US which has no roads leading to it. The only way to get there is with a boat or plane.

1. Um... "Landlocked"
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 08:59 AM by Whitacre D_WI
Means it's inaccessible by water.

on edit: that is to say, the oceans and such. Landlocked cities can still be on rivers and lakes.

19. Too right. We need to drop a line to the Juneau CVB who also say
landlocked: http://www.traveljuneau.com/planner/transportation/index.cfm
What should it be? Waterlocked? :)

4. I played golf with a guy who grew up there yesterday
Um.......er........that is to say yesterday I played golf with a guy who grew up there. He didn't grow up there yesterday.

I was the "ambassador" to two sponosrs and I asked if he was from the area (Richmond VA) and he said no that he had grown up in Juneau. As a way to keep the conversation going (and I was interested) I asked about it and he told me that. I had never heard of that. I knew roughly where Juneau was (Alaska panhandle) but I figured you could drive to it. I guess not.

3. Kind of like driving to Point Roberts, Washington
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 09:08 AM by kskiska
You can't get there through the U.S. and have to drive through Canada to reach it. I drove there out of curiosity once while on vacation.

7. Hmm. The Outer Banks of NC have something like that.
North of Corolla there is a town but you can only get there by driving on the beach. There is a gate at the Virginia border and you have to be a resident of the town to get a key. You have to get on a waiting list and there is no way ($$$) around jumping up in line.

You can drive up the beach to Va. line but if you don't have a key you have to turn around and drive ALL the way back down the beach and back to the mainland etc. That gate could cause you about 5 hours to move 5 feet north.

11. Well if you get a head enough running start...........
NO of course not.

Ricky Henderson after his rookie year was asked to play winter baseball in Puerto Rico. The famous brilliant Henderson said,"Okay I will but only if I can drive my car."

17. You can from anywhere else on O'ahu
about 600 square miles, about twice the land mass of the Five Boroughs of NYC.

Heck, you can even take a bus there!

http://www.thebus.org

But true, you can't even drive here from any of the other islands (Maui, Kaua'i, Hawai'i "Big Island", etc.), much less the mainland.

So, why do we have interstate highways (H-1, H-2, H-3)?

8. Yahoo Maps Seems to Disagree with the Wikipedia
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 09:10 AM by ribofunk
Takes over 26 hours to drive from Seattle. And it seems to show a bridge over the Gastineau channel.

10. "Yahoo"
says it all.........but I'm not sure about who :spank:

Well that is what he told me. Okay there is possibly a way to get there by road but not reasonably. I would guess most things are brought in by boat.

15. Maybe You Need to Take a Ferryboat or Something
I was just curious -- I've heard that about Juneau, too.

On the other hand, I have been punk'd by Yahoo Maps more than once. One example, which I fortunately caught in time, was a set of directions to the Adams Morgan neighborhood in DC which I was emailing to a couple to dozen people. The directions involved going over Rock Creek Park on an old bridge high above the creek. The directions, which showed plainly on the map, involved going to the middle of the bridge and making a left-hand turn onto Rock Creek Parkway, which was at least 50 feet above the creek. I kid you not.

13. I knew that, as I lived in Alaska
But I wanted to give you the Maine answer. "You can't get there from here"Who said Alaska was not smart. Can not get to the capital by car. It is really funny.

The surrounding mountains are so high that they couldn't build roads on them. That's what I heard anyway.
