Wow, Would You Look At That, John Peter Lewis Didn't Suck Last Night
Okay, he did suck a lot, but not as much as usual. He might actually escape the bottom three on American Idol tonight on merit alone.

And the black woman with the short hair gave the best performance I've ever seen on that show.

And my guy, the red-head Conan O'Brien lookalike, hit one out of the park last night. He definitely should stick to these slow, crooning songs.

Any guesses on who gets tossed tonight? I say the Hawaiian chick.

1. I don't get it...you like the red headed guy but not JPL?
Personally I think they are both waaaaaaaaaay out of their league on that show and have floated through this far on some non-musical quality.

But the concept of really disliking one of them but really liking the other surprises me.

That red-head always looks like a deer in the headlights when he sings.

There's really nobody this season that I find even remotely interesting, and I've watched all 3 seasons thus far and had favorites.

There are some on this time around who can sing, but to be honest with you the whole post-Mariah, post-Whitney diva routine is the single most boring thing in the world to me.

3. to me the difference between them
Is that JPL has sucked in every performance he's been in, and the redhead has just sucked when he's put into a genre that's not his own.

Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with that because you could take Frank Sinatra and have him sing country songs and he'd sound stupid too.

At least the redhead kicks ass in his particular style. It just doesn't translate well sometimes in other genres.

But he could put out his own album of crooning songs and I'd buy it.

JPL just can't sing and should have been out of the competition weeks ago.

4. If you had JPL singing Aarron Neville songs....
I maintain he would be just as good at that as JPL would be doing SInatra songs.

The problem with either scenario is that the show isn't American Impersonator. It's American Idol. The purpose of the different style challenges is showing that the person can work within a variety of those style.

I don't think either of those dudes has exhibited that quality.

When the one diva style girl knocked it out of the park singing a Garth Brooks song, that was the only time the cross-genre thing truly impressed me.

11. that whole concept is stupid though
Because I've listened to Clay Aiken's cd and all those songs are pretty much the same genre.

Whoever is going to win this thing isn't going to put out an album with one country song, one rock song, one pop song, one soul song, ect...

That's why I think the redhead will win - he has a distinct style and does it better than all the others do their style (with the possible exception of the black woman with short hair who sung while on the floor).

13. Yeah, but that proves vocal prowess, I think...
A good voice is a good voice and should be able to transcend genres, whether or not that person will actually record in any of those genres.

That red-head will never win. He's turned in one poor performance after another and he has zero stage presence. And to be honest with you, he's not even a particularly adept Frank Sinatra impersonator. It's just the novelty of seeing a 16 year old kid rock that shtick that appeals to people.

It's definitely going to be one of those diva types who wins.

Either way, like I said nobody on this season really appeals to me in any way.

2. He's really Bobby Brady...
He dances like them
He sings like them
He's cheesy like them
He's the Bobby Brady of 2004. I always think he sings like a teenager with a hairbrush in the mirror. He makes my ears bleed.

5. Looking only at last night's performances
My pick for bottom 3 would be Jasmine, Diana (and I hate to say that because I think she's usually very good) and John Stevens.

JPL had a good night.

Fantasia, my pick to win it all, was magnificent.

Jennifer, George and LaToya performed well.

Too many ballads last night.

6. He sucked hard. . . .
Fantasia, Latoya and Jennifer Hudson were really on.

No one else really did it for me last night.

Hopefully JPL will be gone tonight.

8. LaToya is ALWAYS on.
Fantasia was great last night (not only because "Summertime" is one of the best songs ever), but sometimes her Macy Gray act wears a little thin. Jasmine is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the best. Last night she wasn't great, but she was better than Diana DeGarmo, JPL or John Stevens. Jennifer is consistently good, but never blows me away.

George is the tricky one. He's a good singer, he's very charismatic -- but I think Simon hit the nail on the head in one of the earlier broadcasts: he's like a Mowtown backup singer. I knew I could never get fully behind George when he failed to take his performance to a new level on "Motown night" -- that's how he sings, that's the night he should have blown everyone off the stage; but he didn't. Oddly enough, he succeeded in hitting a home run (possibly the best performance from ANYONE this season) on ELTON FREAKING JOHN night.

Strange show.

10. Fantasia is my pick to win it all . . .
I've liked her from the beginning, and that performance of Summertime last night was just amazing.

I said it in a post earlier . . . the only performance of Summertime I've ever heard surpass it was by Janis Joplin, and I'm a HUGE Janis fan, so I' biased :).

7. JPL Doesn't Belong There
He has limited talent and looks like George W. Bush's mentally-challenged illegitimate son.
