Worst movie based on a comic book hero
My vote goes to the 1991 Captain America flick. What stink bomb that was.

8. I loved the Hulk.
But I walked out of Hellboy last night.

All the Batman movies suck, except the portions of the second one featuring Michelle Pfeiffer - she is the only person that gives even the vague impression of being a 3 dimensional character.

Raimi at least did a competent job with it.

6. I'm in the minority that hated that movie with a passion
I thought it just slaughtered the whole premise and pissed on the books I loved so much. I mean...

COME ON!

9. Oh yeah, it was goofy as hell in parts
I just don't think it deserves title of 'worst'--even if it was disappointing. I don't think of it in the class of terrible movies. Plus I like Raimi, and wish him success to create more cheesy Evil Dead movies. :D

I think both Matrix sequels are depressingly lousy, but I wouldn't put them in a 'worst' movies list. Probably we're just reading the question differently. If we're talking 'tarnishing the memory of the comic', there are a lot more I'm sure.

11. Agreed. It was awful, but not the worst.
The Punisher was the worst. The new Punisher looks no better.

And I had no desire to see Matrix 2 or 3, as the first movie answered all that I wanted to know.

14. Yeah--the first Matrix was derivative and dopey, but it was fun
Contrasting the familiar world of the 'Matrix' with only an amorphous, undefined real world worked MUCH better than showing that real world. The action ripped off from anime seemed more or less fresh, and the cheesy philosophy could be safely ignored.

In the sequels you had the boring council sessions, replete with sci-fi howlers such as 'are you questioning my authority, captain?' :D Also dumb walking robots, the slowly dying speechifying character (twice!), painfully detailed realization of the real world that wasn't as interesting as what imagination could make it, a weird dance session, and an ending that sucked on too many levels to count.

The Dolph Lundgren thing was horrible, but this one looks to do the comic justice. We shall know for sure tomorrow.

10. As a non comic book reader
I have to say the hulk was the worst. Flash gordon was pretty bad. I haven't seen hellboy but the previews are too god awful to prompt me to pay $20 (tickets, food, time) for that stuff.

Spiderman was a great movie. I don't know if it followed the comic but the movie producers walk a fine line between meeting the comic book and making something that appeals to a wide audience (so they can make the sequel).

22. Daredevil
Jennifer Garner's overrated, Ben Affleck sucks and there wasn't enough Michael Clarke Duncan. Only Collin Farrell carried his weight in that piece of crap, which featured Garner kicking Affleck's ass twice and then getting effortlessly killed by Farrell. Yawn.

26. If nothing else, the "More peanuts?" scene keeps this flick off list
Colin Farrell's solution to the talkative old lady sitting next to him on the airplane is an all time movie classic. That scene alone was worth the price of admission.

12. the worst of the worst
I agree with you on that film being awful, and probably is the worst comic book movie ever made...that few people ever saw.

However, as far as big-budget comic book movies that were actually in theaters, it's a toss-up between "Daredevil" and "The Hulk" for me.

Daredevil - never, ever have I left a movie thinking "wow, the music was so bad that it ruined the whole film for me" but Daredevil changed that for me. Add the fact that the story sucked and there are plot holes big enough to drive through with a tank. (like Matt Murdoch flipping back and forth from prosecutor to defense attorney) Truly awful.

The Hulk - if you have a film about The Hulk, you should probably have that character in the film. Unbelieveable to me that the Hulk doesn't appear until 70 minutes into the film and then is only in the film for about 30 minutes total (film is over 2 hrs long). So bad my eyes hurt.

And don't even get me started on the Joel Schumacher "Batman" films...
Or "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace"...

16. re: Hulk
Well, if an executive wants a smash-and-fight good-time rolic, it's probably a bad idea to hire one of the most thoughtful, serious and gifted directors of his generation: Ang Lee.

I knew that was going to be a train wreck from the outset- most Ang Lee fans are not going to see the Hulk, and most Hulk fans are not going to appreciate Ang Lee's sensibilities.

That was as bad a Hollywood idea as marketing Eyes Wide Shut as a "Tom & Nicole summer sex romp". It was a Kubrick film, for God's sake! It's going to be long, slow and intellectual! They doomed that fine film by setting up the worst expectaions.

Same with Hulk. But I loved it.

As far as film-making goes, "The Hulk" was a beautiful and shot very nicely. As a superhero movie, it was a steaming pile of dog crap.

The way I put it to a friend of mine was this: if that film had been an Ang Lee movie and you'd never heard of the Hulk character...if it were an art film about a scientist haunted by his past relationships who suddenly turns into a monster (out of nowhere as far as the story goes)...then it would have probably been one of the most-talked about films of the year.

However, it's about a character people know. And there are expectations that come with that character.

For example:
Don't make a movie about Sherlock Holmes that is primarily about etiquette in Victorian-era England.

And don't make a film about the Hulk that is about dysfunctional relationships.

19. nicely put.
Since I was going to see the same insight into humanity that I enjoyed from his other films (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ice Storm, etc.) I was more pleased than most.

Your point about "if we didn't know the character..." is a great one. I never thought of that.

It was kinda average. An attempt at doing something different that worked at times, and didn't at others.

21. Masters of the Universe
I realize that calling "Masters of the Universe" a "comic book"-based is a borderline call. There was a comic book at one point, though, so I'm drafting it into the category.

The movie was so hideously bad bad that it deserved the special consideration. Dolph Lundgren's work in "Masters of the Universe" was so bad that it made "The Punisher" look like a work of art.

I also give "The Punisher" a little bit of a break because there was wee bit of an innovative premise for the plot (one organized crime group ransoming the kids of another organized crime group) that brings "The Punisher up to a D- grade.

Masters of the Universe" really should have gotten the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment.

33. Just one?

I don't think I can pick the worst but these are up there

1. Punisher w/Dolph Lungren- WTF were they thinking? The Punisher with knives?
2. Captain America (1991)- A travesty
3. Fantastic Four (1994)- So bad it was never released.
4. Batman and Robin (1997)- Joel Schumaker should be shot for this piece of crap
5. Judge Dredd- I am de Law!!!

(Dis)honorable mention- Hulk(Bad CG), Daredevil (Ben Affleck sucks)

I haven't seen it yet but it'll probably make this list - Catwoman w/Halle Berry

34. looking like both punisher movies.
Why can't they make a good punisher movie? I've seen previews and he's driving in a car? PUNISHER IS TOO BAD ASS FOR A CAR! PUNISHER NEEDS A VAN!

Also, why do they always have to lame-up the soundtrack of these movies? Like Spiderman, Daredevil, and now Punisher all have horrible soundtracks full of this crappy hard-rock shit that all sounds the same!

here's the bottom line:

Punisher doesn't listen to Nickelback, the Punisher listens to IN FLAMES.

Spiderman doesn't listen to Nickelback/Saliva, he listens to the RAMONES.
