Have Officials ever stolen a game from your team?
The Year: 1979

The event: NCAA Basketball tournament

The game: Arkansas vs Indiana State

The crime: Blatant non calls for Indiana State. They got away with traveling and going out of bounds and nothing was called. Sorry Sycamore fans, in your heart you know I'm right.

Anyone watching this game with an objective eye will come to the same conclusion - THE 1979 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SHOULD HAVE BEEN A CONTEST BETWEEN MAGIC JOHNSON AND SIDNEY MONCRIEF.

1. If you say "never", you're not a guy. Period.
Mine isn't exactly a game, but a race. The 1984 Monaco Grand Prix. Mind you, right after that I had about as much sympathy for France as Ann Coulter has today.

2. No but my team...
has let bad officiating get in their head to the point where they gave a game away because of it.

3. Yeah, pretty much every game they lose.
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 02:09 PM by GumboYaYa
Except of course for the Saints, who lose their games from sheer incompetence.

<ON EDIT> How's it going BH? We will be in town April 22-26 for jazzfest. Let me know if you might venture to the quarter that weekend.

4. 1985 World Series.
Don Denkinger called Jorge Orta of the Royals safe when he was out by 8 miles. Cardinals melt down and lose game 6.

Of course if Joaquin Andujar had kept his head in game 7, they stil could have won, but still...

5. Good call.
That is probably the most blatant example I could think of as well.

6. Yeppers, a Card fan here, I remember that one well
Screamed and yelled, but damn that bad call stuck. And it just seems like all of the air went out of the Cards after that.

Also a Missouri Tiger fan, and the football team has been the victim of two horrible calls. The first was back in 1990 vs Colorado(back when they were hot). Colorado was mistakenly given a fifth down that gave them another shot at pushing the ball over the goal line. Well, the Buffalos were given a touchdown, but if you go back and look at that fifth down play, the ball did not get over the goal line.

The other bad call in Mo football history was in 1997 vs Nebraska. Great game, and NU had rallied to force the game into overtime. NU quarterback throws for the endzone, NU reciever kicks the ball into the air, where upon another reciever catches it for a toudown, game over. Trouble is, it is illegal to kick the ball in that fashion, yet the call was never made against NU. The reciever who did the kicking was a former soccer player, and in an interview after the game said the kick was deliberate.

That's OK, we've beaten CU and NU since then, kicking Cornhusker ass last fall. Next fall, we'll do the same, except it will be up in Lincoln;)

7. yea and the yanks fans will crucify me for this
It sucks being only one of three orioles fans, the others being camero and collegedude though I do think there are others, and if you are one, gimme a shout out lol.
Here goes
1996
Game 1 ACLS, Yankee Stadium
Yankees VS Orioles
Jeter hits a deep ball to right that is deflected by fan, Jeff Meier, ump Garcia calls it a homer. Birdies lose the game, and later win game two, which IMO would have given them momentum going in to Baltimore and thus would have won the series IMO, then went on to the series and beat the braves who they the next year swept in a 3 game innerleague series. As bitter as I am about the Cleveland lost the next year in the ACLS, I give the Indians this, they won legit. Now help me as I am shouted at by yankee fans. Already have my olive branch :).

I got Brady Anderson's autograph that year as a side note to that story. He's being elected in to their hall of fame this year, I didnt go to a game last year for the first time since 1994, I am going to one at least this year.

I see so many balls called as strikes and vice-versa.

18. Yeah, I know......
But you know what it's like when they show that over-the-plate-cam and it's a blatantly bad call.

I know it will never happen, though.

30. I'd put it in only for out/safe, fair/foul and fan interference situations
It would take way too long to use replay for balls and strikes, unless you just wanted to eliminate umpires and let something like ESPN's K-Zone or Questec take over.

12. I fixed it.
And it does count. It came right to mind. I used to use this analogy all the time to try to get freepers to get why I was so pissed. Usually after they would say something stupid like, "The ref had to call the game or it would have gone on and on and on..."

14. Thanksgiving Day, 1998
Steelers vs. Lions
It's the overtime cointoss. Jerome Bettis calls "H-Tails". It's tails...Detroit gets the ball because the official thought the Bus said tails. Lions win, 19-16. I don't think they call the toss in the air anymore since then.

15. My high school powderpuff football team
My junior year. We played the seniors. We scored two more touchdowns than they did and at the end of the game, when we were about to win, the officials called back both touchdowns on technicalities. Bastards.

The next year, when we were seniors, we made sure there was no question and made sure that the juniors didn't even score.

Other than that, no.

17. Eastern Conference NBA Finals, 1994 (Bulls vs. Knicks)
The worst ref in the NBA (who shall not be named by me; he does not deserve it) called a bullshit foul on Scottie Pippen that cost the Bulls the game, the series, and a four-peat.

19. The officials hate my Seahawks
We've been getting screwed since 1998.

There was the phantom touchdown for Vinny Testaverde when referee Phil Luckett (man, I dislike him) mistook Vinny's helmet for the football in a Seahawks/Jets game in 1998. A win for Seattle sends them to the playoffs.

AND...

Last year against the Ravens when Ref Tom White inexplicably stopped the clock for no reason allowing the Ravens enough time to drive for a winning FG.

Not that I would dwell on such things...

21. Close enough. 1982 ACC Championship UNC vs. UVa
The game that single handedly put the shot clock in college basketball. Dean Smith runs 4 Corners offense for the whole 1st half and part of the 2nd half. UNC leads UVa (w/ Ralph Sampson) 7-2 at the half. Wins 47-45.

27. Softball as well
I do HS, 14U 12U 10U... I love it. I've had close calls that may have hurt teams, and definately blown calls.. but nothing I blame myself for that actually costing the team their game.. it will happen no doubt.. just nothing that has kept me up at night.

As you know, Umping, or any type of officiating is tough stuff. People should try it.
