Metatarsal stress fracture-- ever had one? How long to heal?
Hey,

Got the diagnosis today and the doc seemed quite unconcerned, said it was healing as evidenced by the bone callus. But then I googled it and found plenty of scary stuff about stress fractures of the fifth metatarsal (outside of foot) *never healing* or constantly refracturing. Some of that was in reference to soccer players and I guess kicking a ball isn't the best thing for this.

Odd that people frequently don't feel any pain from this injury until weeks after the break, but that's what the doc and website both say. Any advice?

1. You can tape the toe to guard it till it heals
If you aren't involved in high impact athletics it will probably go on to heal...calcium supplements and protective shoes will help.

3. Much obliged!
Not just for that but for your wisdom tooth extraction reply a few weeks back. Very helpful both times!

2. Yes I have had a stress fracture
and it took a really long time to heal for me (maybe a year). I don't even know how I got it. I woke up one morning with a pain in my foot. I used to jog back then, but don't recall injuring it.

The doctor told me I had to stay off of my foot, however, I just started my first full-time teaching job and absolutely could not do that. I had ultrasonic treatments, had the foot wrapped, etc.

The good news is that I never had a reoccurrence once it healed. If yours is healing, that is good news! :-)

5. Popped my fifth when I was 20.
I stepped off my porch awkwardly and rolled over on my ankle. Heard a loud pop and feared the worst in terms of breaking my ankle.

Foot was ace bandaged and I spent two weeks on crutches. Pretty much end of story.
