I have 4 indoor-only cats and have decided not to put them on heartworm preventative. I think the odds are incredibly low that the extremely rare mosquito that gets in my house will be a carrier and will transmit it to one of my cats. So I've decided not to put them on the chemical. But I do suggest that you discuss it with your vet (as I did) and be aware of all the options and the consequences.
I'm so jaded that I think they are trying to sell me something. I thought I would ask other cat owners and make my mind up from the brilliant folks at DU.
