Just made kennel arrangements for my dog
My husband will be out of town during the time that I need to go to my out of state interview. We live a long distance from our family and anyone who we'd trust with our dog has some reason that they cannot host a dog such as having a small apartment, aggressive dogs, or an allergic family member.
This will be the first time that we are boarding our dog. We adopted him from the Humane Society two years ago. He spent two weeks there before we adopted him. I am afraid that he will think that we abandoned him like his previous owners did (They surrendered him.). Am I worried about nothing? It will only be for two days.

Sure, he'll be bummed when you leave, but he'll pee all over himself when you return (with joy, obviously!). He'll just love you all the more for coming back.

They play with him and he always has company.

People who leave the poor things home are always worried that they'll get in trouble or be lonely.

4. Two days isn't that bad.
If you are really worried about him thinking he is being abandoned, see if the kennel owners will let you drop him off for a few hours sometime befor the trip. Then at least he will have the experience of being picked up from the kennel as well as dropped off...

9. Well I didn't do that exactly
but when I went away for a week, I boarded them for 1 night a week prior for the same purpose.

5. Don't worry!


Whenever I go out of town, I ask one of my friends to go by and visit my dog at the Vet, I always leave my friends name and grant permission for the friend to walk my dog.

I also send a little towel for the kennel that has my scent on it.

IMO It is better to pay a few more $$'s for the best Vet then to worry so much!

I still call the Vet every other day to see if my sweetheart is OK.

That's the vaccine against kennel cough, and oftentimes, people will not have given it to the dog with the annual shots...

no bordatella, no boarding (I am sure. And if the kennel takes a dog w/o this shot, you don't want your dog anywhere near the place! A dog who gets kennel cough is really scary... like they are suffocating.)

You might want to check that.

Also, if you had a hidden camera for your dog, you would see that after an hour of you leaving, he will be having a GREAT time. The dogs howl together, then they are quiet, then they howl... and it's all very exciting. Chew toys and his bedding is always a PLUS.

8. I think so
We were considering boarding him another time but he didn't have all the required vaccinations. We had him vaccinated for his annual shots a few months ago and my husband said that he had all his shots required for boarding. They said that I needed to bring his shot record so I will pick that up tomarrow from the vet.
I hope that he'll have a great time. They said that we can bring stuff with him if we want, although they said that they had toys there. I'll probably bring some stuff.

10. If it's a good kennel, he should be fine
unless he's a neurotic weirdo like my Basenji, Kopje, was. Kopje would refuse to poop while he was in the kennel. I guess, despite the outdoor run, he had decided it was "indoors" and he wasn't allowed to poop. This made picking him up something of a trial, as he'd poop a) in the waiting room of the kennel when I settled the account, b) again in the kennel parking lot on the way to the car, c) in the car on the way home, d) in the yard when we got home, e) on the front steps of the house, and f) every half hour thereafter for the rest of the evening.

Damn weird dog. He did that every single time I boarded him.

13. And some of his regular food.
Sometimes a dietary change can cause digestive problems, especially if he's already stressed by a new environment. Do bring an old article of clothing with your scent on it. But don't be surprised if he has the time of his life! Most good kennels try to make it a fun experience for their "guests".

12. I just leave them when I go out of town.
I have six and it would be costly to board them. I only go out of town twice a year for a week or so and just leave them to fend for themselves. I leave them with plenty of food and water, they have 500 acres to roam and hunt on. They really don't need me, I suspect their only in it for the belly rubs and pigs ears. Country life is great!

15. I used to take my dog to a farm...
where a family would board dogs for extended trips et. al. She used to give us THE look when we dropped her off at the beginning of our trip, upon our return to pick her up, she wouldn't want to leave. Best part about it, she was always exhausted from running around and playing with the other dogs at the farm.

I'm sure your pup will do just fine!
