Does anyone here trim their cat's fur?
Female's mane is getting so thick and unruly.

I'm seriously considering trimming it.

What do you guys think?

1. She Will Love You For It
And I love not having to vacuum up and brush the hair off the furniture.

2. Trust me, it is worth it
Our long hair cat gets hairballs if we do not shave him. We got him shaved two weeks ago and he is sooooooo much happier.

Go for it.

3. Don't do it with normal scissors.
It is very easy to hurt them.

4. I say go for it
She looks fine in the picture, but would probably look much spiffier with a haircut. We have one cat with such long hair it never looks good, so we have her shaved about once every three months. She looks a little funny, but she sure likes not having to mess with all that hair. Good luck!

6. brushing
Have you tried giving your cat a good brushing?

It's hard for cats to groom their neck area,
(try licking your own neck)
so there may be a lot of loose, dead hair there.

Note: If you meet a cat who happens to wear a collar
and you want to make a friend for life, scratch him
or her under the collar.

7. Which one of you has that cat with a Santa Claus beard?
That thing's ripe for trimming!

Mine has short hair and doesn't shed very much. I'll trim his ear hair if it gets unruly, though.

10. Our boys get shaved twice a year
and they love it. I've tried electric shavers before but it never looked as good as the groomer's job. The noise and vibration from an electric razor might scare your kitty. Before buying a set take her to a groomer to see how she handles it. Good Luck!

23. Some of the cordless ones
are relatively quiet and don't vibrate all that much. If you just want to trim the kitty's mane, you can get a mini-cordless clipper and shave off the really matted stuff. Go slow and it shouldn't be much of a problem.

12. If they start to get matted, yes
because my three don't much like being groomed, so in summer, when they're blowing coat like mad and it keeps forming knots, I'll trim them short. I'd get them lion cuts, but my husband protests, so it's mostly just the britches and belly fur I trim, because those are the parts they truly hate having groomed.

17. Heya Midori
not too bad, other than a persistent @#$^%&* sinus infection from HELL and too much work to do lately. Work is cutting into my DU time something fierce!

14. Yeah,
I think this year my big guy (weighing in at about 17 lbs) needs to get the famous (or not so famous) lion cut. It looks good on certain longhairs, and boy does Garibaldi need it. He's never had a really thick winter coat until this past winter (they were all brought up in Southern California), but now that we're back in Massachusetts, he's going to have a rough time this summer with the humidity. The rest are short-haired, so I try to just keep them brushed out, and they're shedding wicked right now.

Time to get a groomer and watch Mr. Pussface deal with the loss of his external locks. I think it will be more comfortable overall.

15. If you trim or shave the kitty
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 06:21 PM by zwade
Unless you shave the kitty all the way down, you wont get the undercoat.. which is likely most of the shedding at this time of year...

You can trim em.. but you wont be getting rid of the need to brush brush brush.. just adding a new step... maybe smaller hair will fall out thats about it.

20. My husband threatens to give one of our cats a lions cut

I have never trimmed a cat, but I do have a couple that I have thought about taking to the groomers for a trim. I am sure they would appreciate, especially in the warmer weather.

22. My sister has hers done every now and then
Dennis won't groom himself much and he has beautiful long hair that gets matted.

Clancey on the other hand, grooms compulsively. So cool -- Skittles and my sister both have cats named Clancey. (Clancey used to be mine but my sister stole him from me!)

24. Now, don't get angry ...
but I've actually heard people talking about vacuuming their cats, in an attempt to lose the hair that is falling out (around this time of year when shedding is perhaps worst).

I would trim the hair too if I thought it was getting unruly. Ever think of taking the kitty for a trip to the kitty spa? We have to take our puppy to the groomer (I realize how elitist that sounds). We have a Yorkie though and her hair grows fast and long, so we have pros cut it (after I messed it up a few times :P ).

Good luck with your kitty :)
