Merrie Monarch Hula Festival coming to a RealPlayer near you
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 06:54 PM by KamaAina
This is NOT the tacky hula* you may have seen in your hotel lobby if you've ever been here. It is at once an athletic competition and cultural expression. Read all about it:

http://www.thehawaiichannel.com/hulafest/index.html

The "Merrie Monarch" was King David Kalakaua, who revived Hawaiian culture during his reign, just a few years before the Overthrow (it was his sister, Lili'uokalani, who was overthrown, with U.S. Marines not very far in the background).

Timing is a little bit rough back East: 6 PM HST, 9 PDT, midnight EDT (yikes).

Edit: This is a major event, broadcast on statewide TV, but not to the mainland, even to places like Las Vegas, Seattle or San Jose, where there are thousands of Hawai'i expats. Cripes. They can get the Westminster Dog Show on cable, and not the Merrie Monarch?
