NC DUers - wanna get together for ice cream 8/23?
It's been a long time since we met up. And I drove past the MVF store today and it was nearly empty. I'm figuring a Saturday afternoon meetup over there would kick a little ass.

Anyone but me interested? Supe? DP? Nclib family? How 'bout you, comeherekris? Anyone?

And since I only live a couple miles down the road, I'd be glad to invite everyone for some beer & bonfire action afterwards if anyone's interested in that. Y'all speak up. I'll keep this thread kicked to the best of my ability this weekend, so hopefully folks'll see it.

Cheers,

shortbus

5. Like the Jerry Lewis telethon...
only different. :-) You can wear a bad tux and host. DP can be the cute little number who mans the tote-board (sorta like Vanna While turning the letters on Wheel of Fortune). I'll man the phone and you can trot me out periodically looking sad and pitiful (and half-naked) to remind everyone why we're here.

Hey, I have no shame about crassly pandering to the sympathies of the masses if it means getting to see you and DP at the same time simultaneously.

10. I'm afraid I don't own a bad tux
or a good one, for that matter. Can't I just wear my edible boxers? A $20 donation to the fund gets ya' one bite?

if you come and supervise? I dunno if you've seen her pic or not, but that NSMA is a real looker! I'm sure there's room for 3 on the hood of that car. But the ice cream's gonna melt fast.

8. Hey GiNC!
I'm in the area right between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, and the other folks I mentioned are all Triangle folks, with the exception of comeherekris, who's up in Danville, VA. You'd have a bit of a drive to get here, but not quite as far as if you were going to Raleigh or even Durham.

There's also a Triad contingent, with NYYFan and MrJinx and a few others (Hey! You guys are invited too!).

We talked awhile back about doing a Carolinas get-together, but I think we were all too lazy to do the legwork to make it happen.

22. 105 miles from Fontana Village, according to DeLorme map.
I'll be between Cashiers and Brevard, just southeast of Lake Toxaway.

24. So you'll be down in the corner
where NC, SC and GA meet? Cool spot, if maybe a little too close to the scurrilina line. ;-) There's great trout fishing at Fontana, and I imagine that applies south of Fontana, too. I wish y'all the best of luck in the move.

21. Hey! I'm off that day!
Where's this MVF store? Sounds fun!

On Saturday 8/23 I'm going to be at JR Cigars at I-95 Exit 97 in Selma (if you're coming out of Raleigh, US 70 east is easiest) so all the cigar smoking liberals in NC, SC and VA should come out for Smokin' Out Bush 2003...they have just re-released Por Larranaga (one of Rudyard Kipling's favorites, as you will learn if you read "The Betrothed," the poem which contains the line "A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke.")

Fun cigar trivia: About a year ago JR's had a torcedor (someone who rolls cigars) up from South America to make cigars for people. The deal was, buy a box of cigar such-and-such and receive another one rolled right in front of you. They do this all the time and people really like it. Our local socialist newspaper did a little story about the roller, and started off with that line from Kipling. Then the dumb-ass made the supreme mistake of saying "But I never thought that line was anti-woman." Something tells me the reporter never read that poem. It was written after a famous Breach of Promise divorce case in England in Kipling's time. The lady, Maggie in the poem, sent the protagonist an ultimatum: "You must choose between me and your cigar." The poem took fifty-two stanzas to explain why the cigars were staying and Maggie was not.

"For Maggie has written a letter to give me my choice between
The wee little whimpering Love and the great god Nick o' Teen.

And I have been servant of Love for barely a twelvemonth clear
But I have been Priest of Cabanas a matter of seven year."

Doesn't exactly sound pro-woman to me.

23. Hey jmowreader
MVF is a dairy farm in Orange County. If you have a map of the area, draw a triangle with Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Saxaphaw as the vertices, and the MVF farm is roughly in the center of that triangle.

Now what's up with this cigar thing? And is there any room for a handrolled cigarette kind of guy in the crowd?

26. Hi SBP
What time were you guys thinking about? We have a birthday party to attend next Sat. from 2 to 4, but would love to see you.

Did I tell you we are moving to Durham next month? Keep your fingers crossed everything goes smoothly for us.

28. No kidding? You guys found a place?
That's fantastic! I'll look forward to hearing about it.

As far as I know we haven't settled on anything re: ice cream. Me and Supe appear to be interested, and a couple other in-staters have asked about it, but there is no plan as of right now.

Thanks for the kick, though. I've neglected this thread today.

Took long enough huh?

The house is an older home in the Forest Hills area. We're pretty excited. We haven't closed on our house or the new house yet so I'm still nervous.

And I'd love to see your new house. I'm so jealous of you living way out in the country. That would be my first choice, but with little nclib, well, he needs a social life.

37. I forgot you were "here" now!
Definitely cruise up!

It's off of I-40 in Orange County - PM me for directions. Not sure how long it'll take to get here from Fayetteville, but definitely worth it. And yeah, I'd love to have some folks out for a bonfire and some beer. My house is definitely a work in progress, and bug spray might be a good idea. And lawn chairs. But sure - a little fire and beer out in the sticks? Can't beat that.
