I've been posting on DU through most of GeeDub's illegitimate term, but as you may notice I have under 500 posts. I read semi-regularly, but only reply when I feel I have something substantial to add. The thing I've noticed in the last couple of months is that a post can go from 0 to a 100+ replies in a blink of an eye. Or an interesting post can get lost on the 4th or 5th page of listings in a matter of minutes if it doesn't immediately get replies. It seems that to keep up with what's going on here you have to be quick and I'm getting too old to be quick.
I think this is a plus in that it shows that DU is gaining in popularity, but I also feel that many people reply to posts simply because the subject interests and they want to acknowledge that interest even if they don't have anything to say. I've also noticed more off topic rabbit holes where two or three people will engage in what amounts to a personal conversation, completely off topic and end up comprising ¾ of the total replies to the post.
Because of this, I don't spend as much time here as I used to, it's just too difficult and time consuming to wade through all the chatter to glean the intelligent responses. I don't have a solution other than for people to stop and think before they post and ask two questions: 1) am I really adding anything? 2) am I talking to everyone?
