What is your favorite message board software
There are a bunch out there, which one do you like the best. My personal favorite is vBulletin. I like it so much that I bought it.

2. I like vBulletin
...and use it on all my sites. It is costly, though.

3. what do you think of vB3.0
I think they have made a bunch of improevments, 2.* is still a solid board, but 3.0 is really nice.

7. I only tried it in early beta...
...I can't do much experimenting until the school year ends...too much work.

Based on the forums I've seen using it, though, v 3 looks mighty good.

4. DU's, of course

vBulletin is nice, but it costs money.

I use ProBoards for my sports board. It works well, and I can customize it with HTML and Java hacks. Best of all, it's free. Also similar to Invision, but PB seems to have more customization.

Here's my board:

The worst is one that no longer exists - Everyone.net. They shut down their forum service because it was so bad.

8. I think the software is a big reason for the success of this joint
I've never experienced a board that turns over so many times every minute and does it smoothly.

9. vBulletin, PHPBB wouldn't be what they are now if not for the UBB
Give a nod to the UBB. The Ultimate Bulletin Board was the prototype for the modern BBS format that you see here at DU and for most forums on the web. The creator of the UBB originally designed it as a streamlined, yet formal answer to the often squirrelly WWWBoards that resemble newsgroups and were once the most common type of forum on the web. But once the UBB caught on, it spread like wildfire, eventually taking the place of the WWWBoards.

UBB software is pretty pricey nowadays, but I believe the company has been licensing their source code to other developers -- hence the rise of vBulletin and other forum systems that are similar, and now even more popular and widespread than the UBB. Of course, it's also always possible to reverse engineer the look, feel and function of a UBB/vBulletin forum.

Just a bit of "web history" for anyone interested. :)
