How much did you pay to the IRS on tax day???
My wife and I paid almost 2,000. We have no children, rent a house, but claim zero. It was a painful check to write especially when Bush is spending my money in Iraq.

2. We got a refund
We're over-withholding -- the first year we filed jointly, we got bit b/c of under-withholding and owed $1,400. So we upped withholding, and wouldn't you know it? We bought a house and itemized our deductions and got a refund the next year. I suppose I should change my W-4.

3. we had to come up with
$1,000 plus and that is why I call my representatives and tell them that I cannot afford any more tax cuts. Those bastards. My husband was so pissed that where it said do not staple, he put about a hundred staples into the check attaching it to the return. And we teach our kids that taxes are a good thing! But not when it is so unfair like this year.

5. Nothing
I only worked part-time and made less than $8000. Had I filed, I would have gotten $25 back. Unfortunately, I lost my tax form and decided to call the whole thing off.

6. I got back $250 federal.
Only because I got to count my $2,000 in tuition and the enormous expenses I have buying teaching supplies.
I had to pay the state $65.

15. It Happens
But then again, I set my own hours, contribute time, money and effort to who I want to and have only my fiance and the IRS to account for my time and effort.

Just wish I could afford a Union Crew or think of a way to get a Costco in my area.

19. Self employment tax...
is brutal. Hopefully, you are in a situation where you can write a bunch of stuff off and get it slimmed down. I had an odd working situation, and I had to pay all those taxes, but couldn't write anything off. I was earning like under $30k a year, but still had to cut a check for like $6 k, it was rough. You have my sympathies...Kevin.

16. $23, 650.00
We received restitution in an embezzelment case from our business. Still got screwed as we settled for alot less than the criminal took (long story). Uncle Sam gets this chunk, plus the Gov't will be sniffing around our books this coming year, and beyond.

moral of the story: NEVER TRUST ANYONE when money is involved. One of the prosecuters said to me, you might as well steal the money yourself, because sooner or later someone else will do it for you

22. Almost $5000
including my underpayment for 2003 and my quarterly for April 15 (I'm self-employed too). Now I have to start saving for June 15th-- the money comes in but there doesn't seem to be that much left when it's time for the quarterly. Most of it goes for Social Security, which I hope is still solvent by the time I'm ready for it.

23. About the same as you
I made the mistake of claiming 1 because I thought that would be about right since my husband makes enough less than me. Last year we did this and we owed $78, which I thought was good, owing a small amount on tax day, showing that the government wasn't holding onto our money when we needed it. My husband made a little, not a lot more, and we owed about the same as aquaman. I cannot figure that one out, especially since my husband said that we would have still owed money if I had claimed 0. My in laws are going to help us out, luckily, or we'd probably end up in the tax debt situation that one of our friends is in. We don't make that much. I should have been suspicious about not having much taken out of my check, but I thought that was the result of the tax cut. I might be switching jobs soon. I probably should claim 0 this year.

25. $279
My husband, a union carpenter in a right to work state, was unemployed for 6 months and recieved 8 W2s for the termpory jobs that filled up the other six months. I am self employed. Usually, he overwitholds and it covers my taxes. We had to put our measly rainy day money into a $2000 IRA to keep from owing more. We put it in his name because he can draw it out in 2 1/2 years without penalty and I think we are going to need it. If we could have afforded more, we could have actually received a refund. Without paying it, we would have owed $1700 and a penalty and would have been required to make quarterly payments. I was just grateful we could put the $2000 in. Next year, we may not be so fortunate.
