Does anybody watch Deadwood on HBO?
I like it, but I haven't heard what anybody else thinks of it.

3. I can't believe they killed Wild Bill off so soon.
I figured that was how he was going to die (to stay historically accurate) but not in the 4th episode.

6. Yeah!
Surprised me too. And they didn't show the "Dead Man's Hand", the black aces and eights. That's the most famous part of the story.

14. Not historically accurate.

Hickock arrived in Deadwood in June, wasn't shot till August 2nd. McCall was apprehended by Calamity Jane, escaped, and was tried and hung in Yankton, Dakota.

27. I vacationed w/Wild Bill
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 12:58 AM by Lady Texan
Rather, Keith Carradine, the actor playing Wild Bill.
To further clarify, he was staying at the same resort as my husband & I, a few yrs ago in Big Sur, CA.
We ate breakfast with him and a very nice girl he was with.

Every episode, I ask my husband "Remember when we were on vacation with Wild Bill?" - instant eyerolling from my husband.

My fleeting brush w/celebrity.

5. great show . . .
I particularly like the saloon owner . . . think his name is Al Swearington, or something like that . . . as perfect a villian as I've seen in a long, long time . . .

15. Swearengen... most vile TV series villain I've ever seen
Ian McShane is going to end up a huge star by the end of this series for his work as Al Swearengen. I've never seen a TV villain I really wanted to see die screaming like this.

You can always trust him to do whatever is the most to his own benefit, regardless of the consequences to anyone else.

29. Isn't he the guy
Paul Newman and Robert Redford stung in the "Sting"?

At least that's who he looks like to me.

Now I have the 'Sting' melody running through my brain .....

7. I like it a whole lot. Even more since I have read some about
the real events in Deadwood. So far it is very accurate. The pig sty was the funeral of choice for quite a while. Wild Bill was shot in the back pretty much just like shown. The language is quite frontier-like.
And the laudnum freaks were everywhere. After the US Civil War there were uncounted thousands of laudnum junkies, possibly more than we have ever had addicted to anything except alcohol or caffeine. It was a really big problem which lead to federal control of narcotics in the early part of the 1900's.

8. HBO owns Sunday nights.
Deadwood is just as good as the Sopranos. Montana is really interesting, too; obviously going to be the "good guy" on the show but really quiet and quick to anger.

I think the prostitutes are probably a little better looking than they actually were in that locale at that time, but I can deal with some poetic license there. :)

12. I think its formulaic
it basically follows the Sopranos formula.

But I still eagerly await each episode. And I still can't believe Bill is dead!

I love the dark, broody, handsome-with-a-secret types!
I so want to figure him out.
I can only admit my lust for him here, in the DU Lounge.

I'd like to thump the sycophant little inn keeper though. It's going to be a face off between Al and Montana I believe.

28. Isn't the innkeeper's dialogue great 'tho?
What is his name - DB something....

His dialogue is great writing, excellently delivered.
Reminds me of a western-ized Shakespearean actor.

21. I'm Al Swearengen and I approved this fucking message...
My Fellow Americans:

When in the course of human events it becomes necessary to state the obvious, that is, what we have occupying the White House is no "Commander-In-Chief". I wouldn't trust that mush-mouthed cretin to command a turd from his own bowels upon arising let alone run a "War On Terror". Dosen't say much for the advantages of an Ivy League education now does it? (I must admit, however, a twinge of admiration for that cocksucker Cheney; why he needs that pious prick puppet dangling from his strings is beyond my imagining.)

Be that as it may, I submit that to truly win this war, you need somebody who is willing to go toe-to-toe with these evil heathen scumbags and give them a taste of their own medicine.

You need somebody who is gonna keep that cocksucker Osama's eyes in his pocket after they pop out of their sockets cause his balls replace them after I kick him in the crotch.

(To the womenfolk: I apologize for my blunt language and use of metaphor, but the time for pussyfooting around has ended.)

So if you want someone who will send those heathen cocksuckers to hell sans virgins, I'm the only man who can get the job done.

So vote Swearengen for President...

...or go fuck yourselves!

Deadwood isn't in the United States, so you can't run for President.

Sorry, Al.

31. What Mr. Swearengen meant to say...
To the Electorate and General Populace:

It has come to my attention that a certain epistle has leaked out authored by my employer, one Mr. Alfred "Al" Swearengen.

As you can tell by it's colorful colloquialisms, Mr. Swearengen is not given to flowery language such as those as his Yale elite opponents may be wont to use. Mr. Swearengen is a plain-spoken man who does not suffer fools gladly, nay even at all, and as such would not even consider the current occupant of the Oval Office fit to employ to empty chamber pots in his gaming establishment, let alone leader of the free world. Therefore, Mr. Swearengen feels it is necessary, albeit reluctantly, to throw his hat into the ring (preferably a dandy bowler type).

However, since the recent implementation of rules on so-called "indecent speech", Mr. Swearengen feels he needs a modicum of time with a speech coach in order to curb his tendencies to run afoul of the proscribed words in order that his press availibilities refrain from sounding like a series of electronic bleeps and whatnot, thus confusing the electorate into perhaps thinking that Mr. Swearengen is some kind of outer space alien which, I can attest that being an acquaintance of many years, he most assuredly is not.

Therefore it is necessary to have all press enquiries go through my office until such time as the Swearengen for President campaign is ready to mount up and ride to the rescue of these great United States of America, such time hopefully being the very near future.

I remain your humble servant.
