Who used to push one of these around???
Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 06:43 PM by SoCalDem
When I was a kid , we had two push mowers.. The green one was a "cranky, stubborn one" but ...the red one.....oh my.. the red one was slick as a whistle.. the blades meshed perfectly and it hummed along making that unique sound that they made... I always wanted to mow the lawn ...if the red one was available...
If I recall, we sold them at a garage sale in 1965.. I'm sure we got more for the red one... probably $10 bucks :(

Power to the Push Mower

Pushing his nonpower mower across the lawn every week, he would tell everyone it's environmentally sound, fabulous exercise, and, thankfully, quiet.

Was he an odd duck, or just a man before his time? The Green Mountain Mower, made of cast iron, comes in a 16” width (35 lbs.), ideal for average lawns, and 14” (30 lbs.), for small lawns and trimming. Optional sharpening kit keeps a keen edge on blades without hand sharpening or blade removal.

Grass catcher has nylon mesh sides and polyresin bottom. Easy to assemble. USA since 1897.

(For mowers please add $5.00 additional for shipping and handling.)

3. Hand clippers!!!
I remember clipping the fence line and the house line and all the trees with hand clippers. For hours. My kids think I'm lying!

And my mother actually thought it might be a nice idea to get the 'new' electric clippers for a Christmas gift for me!!!! Don't think so.

5. Hey, we've still got two of them
We've got a not-much-more-than-postage-stamp lawn, and there seems no point at all in doing the thing with the gasoline and the fumes and the noise.

One is black and looks a lot like your picture, but that one's a bit old and cranky. The one we normally use is red and green, and I think it comes from Germany.

Of course, my real ambition is to get rid of all the grass and have nothing but a variety of ground covers, with little paths and rustic benches . . . but push mowers will do as a stopgap.

8. I still use mine
I have a red push mower and believe I can mow my lawn faster then with a powermower if you include the time spent purchasing fuel, filling the damn thing, checking oil, and trying to start it, etc. My little mower is my ecological statement but I would change my tune in a heartbeat if I had some 'real' acreage to mow.

Sharpening Kit? I just use a bastard file (actually, a mill file, but I wanted to say bastard with some authority) every two or three years. Four or five long strokes on each blade, and I'm done. Ten minutes tops, and that includes a couple squirts of oil.
